On this page
A regulated taxi runs on the AMB meter (€2.80 plus €1.35 per km by day on weekdays) and suits short rides. Apps can book taxis at a price agreed in advance, or private hire cars ordered ahead. A rental car suits days out if it meets the low-emission zone rules (weekdays, 7 am to 8 pm). A chauffeur is quoted on request, by the journey or by the hour.
This guide compares the four on how you book, how the price is set and the rules that apply, using the AMB taxi tariffs and the pages of the Generalitat, Barcelona City Council and the DGT, all checked in October 2026. For getting into town from the airport, including public transport, see Barcelona Airport to the City Center.
The four options side by side
| Option | How you book | How the price is set | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regulated taxi | Hail one with a green light, or use a rank or a phone line | AMB meter: T-1 by day, T-2 at night, on Saturdays and on holidays | Black and yellow; ask for a printed receipt |
| Taxi booked in an app | AMB's Picmi Taxi or another taxi app | T-3 price agreed before the trip (€8 minimum), or the meter | Taxi apps must apply the official fares |
| Private hire car in an app | In the app, ahead of time | Not a taxi, so the AMB taxi tariff does not apply | At least 15 minutes between booking and pickup (Generalitat) |
| Rental car | With a rental company | Rental terms, plus fuel and parking | Low-emission zone on weekdays, 7 am to 8 pm |
| Chauffeur | Quote request with route, date, time, guests and bags | Quoted on request, by the journey or by the hour | Booked ahead, for one journey or a day |
Regulated taxis and the AMB tariff
Barcelona's taxis are black and yellow, and Aena reminds arriving passengers that these are the only official ones. Metropolitan taxis charge the urban tariffs approved each year by the AMB's Metropolitan Taxi Institute, which for 2026 are:
- T-1, weekdays from 8 am to 8 pm: €2.80 minimum fare, €1.35 per km and €27.75 per hour of waiting.
- T-2, weekdays from 8 pm to 8 am, Saturdays and public holidays: €2.80 minimum fare, €1.66 per km and €27.75 per hour of waiting.
- T-3, only through approved taxi apps: a price agreed before the trip, worked out from the minimum fare, the distance, the time in real traffic and any supplements, with an €8 minimum. The app must show you its conditions, including the minimum charge, before you book.
- T-4, between the Moll Adossat cruise ship dock and the airport, in either direction: €46 with all supplements included.
On the meter tariffs, a €4.60 supplement applies when the airport or the Moll Adossat cruise dock is the origin or destination, €3.30 for a journey from Fira Barcelona Gran Via, €2.55 for a journey from Estació de Sants and €4.60 when 5 to 8 passengers travel. A journey that starts at the airport costs at least €21.00 with supplements included, and on the nights of 23 to 24 June, 24 to 25 December and 31 December to 1 January a further €4.60 applies from 8 pm to 8 am.
Two more rules matter on longer trips. If you choose a toll road, you also pay the toll for the taxi's way back. And these urban tariffs cover journeys within the Barcelona metropolitan area: when the origin or destination is outside it, as on many day trips, the intercity fares set by the Generalitat de Catalunya apply.
A free taxi shows a green light, and the AMB suggests hailing one at a corner. Taxis that take cards indicate it, drivers must carry at least €20 in change, and the AMB recommends a printed receipt, which you need for a complaint or to trace a lost item.
Ride-hail apps: a taxi or a private hire car
In Barcelona, booking a ride in an app can mean two different services.
The first is a regular taxi. The AMB says taxi drivers who work with app platforms must respect the official fares, and the T-3 price agreed in advance is only available through these apps. The AMB Mobilitat app includes Picmi Taxi: if you enter a destination, it calculates the final price on the T-3 tariff with all supplements included, or you can ask for a metered taxi instead.
The second is a private hire car with a driver, booked through an app. These cars are not taxis, so the AMB taxi tariffs above do not apply to them. The Generalitat's transport department, on its page about these services and the 2022 decree-law that lets them keep working in the Barcelona metropolitan area, says at least 15 minutes must pass between booking and the start of the service, and that the cars may not cruise the streets looking for passengers or pick up anyone who has not booked. In practice, you cannot wave one down, so book before you need it.
Rental car: the low-emission zone, labels and parking
A rental car gives you the most freedom for days beyond the city, from the coast to the mountains. Inside Barcelona, three sets of rules apply.
The ZBE Rondes de Barcelona
Barcelona City Council describes the low-emission zone as an area of over 95 km² that takes in the whole city between the Ronda de Dalt and Ronda del Litoral ring roads, except Vallvidrera, el Tibidabo i les Planes and the Zona Franca, plus all or part of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Adrià de Besòs. It applies on working days, Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 8 pm. Cars with a DGT environmental label (0, ECO, C or B) drive in it without restriction; cars without a label may not. The ring roads themselves are open to every vehicle, but an unlabeled car may not take an exit into the zone. The fine is a single €200 that rises by 30% during a pollution episode.
The DGT environmental label
The DGT sorts vehicles into four labels by efficiency. 0 covers battery electric and extended-range models, plug-in hybrids with 40 km of electric range and fuel cell models. ECO covers plug-in hybrids with less range, non-plug-in hybrids and cars running on natural gas or LPG. C goes to petrol cars and light vans registered from January 2006 and diesel ones from September 2015, and B to petrol from 1 January 2001 and diesel from 2006. The rest, the 50% most polluting, get no label. You can look up a Spanish-registered car's label by its plate on the DGT website, so check your rental before you drive into the zone.
Cars with foreign plates
A car registered outside Spain has no DGT label, so it must be registered with the AMB's low-emission zone register before it enters the zone. Cars that meet the equivalent standards (electric, petrol Euro 3 or higher, or diesel Euro 4 or higher) can get a long-term permit, with a €7 administration fee for the check and the registration. Cars that do not can apply for a limited number of daily permits a year.
Parking in the center
Regulated on-street parking in Barcelona is called AREA and is run by BSM for the City Council. Visitors may use blue and green spaces but not resident-only ones, for the maximum time on the signs, usually 1 or 2 hours. Blue spaces are regulated Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00 without a break, with longer hours in the center on Saturdays and in beach areas on Sundays and holidays. On fee A, the hourly rate runs from €1.25 for zero-emission cars to €3.75 for cars without a label. You pay at the meter, in the smou app or in another authorized app.
A pre-booked chauffeur: by the journey or by the hour
A chauffeur is arranged ahead rather than found on the street. Chauffeur Hire Barcelona quotes every journey on request: send the route, the date and time, your flight, train or ship if there is one, and the number of guests and bags. Transfer and chauffeur prices are not published on the site.
You can book in two ways. A private driver in Barcelona is quoted on the route you give, from one drive across the city to a full day with stops. An hourly chauffeur books a vehicle and driver for a set number of hours, for days when the order of the stops may change. Arrivals by air have their own page, Barcelona airport transfers, and the areas of the city are listed on chauffeur service in Barcelona.
Which option fits your trip
| Your trip | Options that fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A short ride across the center | A taxi from the street, a rank or an app | Metered on T-1 or T-2, or a T-3 price agreed in advance |
| Airport to your hotel | Taxi, public transport or a car booked ahead | Taxis from the airport cost at least €21.00 with supplements |
| Cruise dock to the airport | A taxi on T-4, or a car booked ahead | T-4 is €46 with all supplements included |
| A day of meetings | An hourly chauffeur, or a taxi for each leg | One booking for the day, or a fare per ride |
| A day trip out of the city | A rental car or a private driver | Outside the metropolitan area, taxis use the intercity fares |
No single option wins everywhere. A taxi is quick to find and its tariff is public; an app adds a price agreed in advance; a rental car brings freedom with rules attached; a chauffeur asks for a quote and some planning, and in return the car is booked for your route and times.

Questions travelers ask
Can you hail a taxi in the street in Barcelona?
Yes. The AMB says a taxi showing a green light is free, and corners are the best places to stop one. You can also take one at a rank, call a radio taxi or book through an app. App bookings can use the T-3 tariff, a price agreed before the trip with an €8 minimum; on the meter, the 2026 day rate is €2.80 plus €1.35 per km.
Are ride-hail cars the same as taxis in Barcelona?
No. An app can book a regulated taxi, which must charge the official AMB fares, or a private hire car with a driver, which is a separate service outside the taxi tariffs. The Generalitat's page on these cars says at least 15 minutes must pass between booking and pickup, and that they may not cruise the streets looking for passengers.
Can I drive a rental car into the Barcelona low-emission zone?
Yes, if it has a DGT environmental label: cars labeled 0, ECO, C or B drive in the ZBE Rondes de Barcelona without restriction. Cars without a label may not enter on working days, Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 8 pm, and the fine is €200 at the time of checking. Look up a Spanish-registered car's label by its plate on the DGT website; foreign-plated cars must be registered first.
What are the taxi supplements for the airport and the cruise port?
Under the AMB's 2026 urban tariffs, journeys to or from the airport and to or from the Moll Adossat cruise ship dock each carry a €4.60 supplement. Between the dock and the airport, the T-4 tariff applies instead: €46 in either direction, all supplements included. A journey that starts at the airport costs at least €21.00 with supplements included.
When does a chauffeur make more sense than a taxi or a rental car?
When the day has several stops, when a group with bags wants one booking, or when you want the journey arranged before you arrive. Chauffeur Hire Barcelona quotes each journey on request, by the route or by the hour: send the route, the date and time, any flight, train or ship, and the number of guests and bags.
Where can visitors park in central Barcelona?
In AREA blue and green on-street spaces, but not in resident-only ones, for the maximum time on the signs, usually 1 or 2 hours. Blue spaces are regulated Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00, with longer hours in some areas. At the time of checking, fee A runs from €1.25 an hour for zero-emission cars to €3.75 for cars without a label.
