By road, Montserrat is 60 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 h without traffic, and a car can take you right up to the monastery, where the car park has limited capacity. Without a car, the hourly R5 train runs to the foot of the mountain, and from there the rack railway climbs to the monastery in 15 minutes or the Aeri cable car in 5.
Three ways up to the monastery
The monastery sits high on the Montserrat massif, and there are three ways to reach it from the valley: the road, the Cremallera rack railway and the Aeri cable car. The table compares them as published at the time of checking (October 2026); the sections below explain where each one starts and how the day fits around them.
| Way up | Where it starts | Ride | How often | Adult fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Road | Your pickup point in Barcelona | 60 km, about 1 h from Plaça de Catalunya without traffic | Not timetabled | Car park at the monastery, rates set each year |
| Rack railway (Cremallera) | Monistrol de Montserrat station, via Monistrol-Vila | 5 km, 15 minutes | 2 or 3 trains an hour, by season | €9 one way, €15 return |
| Aeri cable car | C-55 road at km 11.5, Monistrol de Montserrat | 1,350 meters, 5 minutes | Every 15 minutes | €10 one way, €15 return |
The road: 60 km and a limited car park at the top
The road estimate runs from Plaça de Catalunya to the monastery: 60 km, about 1 h by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, checked 2026-09-30). The routed line leaves the city on the C-16 and finishes on the BP-1121, the road that climbs the last stretch to the monastery. Traffic leaving Barcelona and your exact pickup point change the real time.
At the top, the Montserrat Mountain Trust runs an attended car park at rates set each year by the Catalan Parliament, and Montserrat Visita, the sanctuary's visitor site, says plainly that its capacity is limited. The fee also pays for lighting, cleaning, gardening and the upkeep of the natural park.
The same page lists one more road option for visitors without a car: a bus run by Autocars Julià from Viriat street, beside Sants station. It leaves Barcelona at 9:15, the return trip departs at 17:00 from October to May and at 18:00 from June to September, and a one-way ticket cost €6.25 at the time of checking.
The rack railway (Cremallera)
FGC, the Catalan government's railway company, runs the Montserrat Rack Railway. It starts at Monistrol de Montserrat station, where the R5 trains from Barcelona-Plaça Espanya stop, calls at Monistrol-Vila and climbs 5 km to the monastery in 15 minutes. Monistrol-Vila has a large free car park, so a car can also drop you there if you want the ride up by rail.
The service runs all year, with hours that follow the season, as published on FGC's Turistren site:
- High season: 8:35 to 20:15, three trains an hour.
- Mid season: 8:35 to 19:15, three an hour until 15:00 and two an hour after.
- Low season: 8:35 to 18:15, two an hour.
The season calendar is on the same site. An adult ticket cost €9 one way and €15 return at the time of checking. Montserrat also has two funiculars: Sant Joan, for mountain views, was running, while Santa Cova, which serves the site where legend says the image of the Virgin was found, was out of service for maintenance until further notice.
The Aeri cable car
The Aeri de Montserrat entered service in 1930. Its lower station is on the C-55 road (Abrera to Manresa) at km 11.5 in Monistrol de Montserrat, served by the Aeri de Montserrat stop on the R5 line, and it has free parking. Cabins leave every 15 minutes and cover 1,350 meters, on gradients of up to 45%, in 5 minutes.
The 2026 adult fare is €10 one way and €15 return, with lower fares for children and for visitors over 65. The operator's site gives the train journey from Plaça Espanya to its station as 1 hour, with trains every 60 minutes. Montserrat Visita notes that the last cable cars and rack railway trains of the day vary with the season, so check the operators' calendars before you plan the way down.
Timing your visit
The monastery keeps its own hours, and two of them shape most days: the late-morning pause at the Throne of Our Lady and the 13:00 prayer with the Escolania, the abbey's boys' choir. These are the times published by Montserrat Visita, the Escolania and FGC when checked in October 2026:
| What | When | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Basilica | 7:00 to 20:00 | The Throne of Our Lady keeps shorter hours |
| Throne of Our Lady (La Moreneta) | 8:00 to 10:30 and 12:00 to 18:25 | Closed in the late morning |
| Escolania, Salve and Virolai | Monday to Friday, 13:00 | Reservation required; no boys' choir on Saturdays |
| Sunday Conventual Mass | 11:00 | Reservation required; the boys sing at it |
| Museum of Montserrat | 10:00 to 17:45 on weekdays, 10:00 to 18:45 at weekends | Open later at weekends |
| Rack railway | From 8:35 until 18:15, 19:15 or 20:15 | Depends on the season |
La Moreneta, the image of Our Lady of Montserrat, is a 12th-century Romanesque polychrome carving. Pope Leo XIII proclaimed Our Lady of Montserrat patron saint of Catalonia in 1881, and in 1947 the image was enthroned in a silver altarpiece in the upper section of the basilica apse. Because the Throne closes from 10:30 to 12:00, plan to be there either early or after midday.
If you want to hear the Escolania, book the 13:00 prayer: the choir's own site says a reservation is required for it and for the Sunday Mass. Montserrat Visita adds that choir times vary with religious celebrations and the school calendar, so look at the Escolania's agenda for your date.
Two published limits are worth planning around: the car park at the top has limited capacity, and in low season the rack railway service ends at 18:15, which matters if anyone in your group plans to come down by train. Bring a layer as well. Montserrat Visita gives an average yearly temperature of 13 to 14 °C at the monastery's weather station, at 740 meters, and notes that sea winds often bring thick fog.
What a private car changes
By public transport the day has two legs each way: the R5 to the foot of the mountain, then the rack railway or the cable car, with the R5 running hourly. A car turns that into one journey from your hotel to the monastery and back, with no change at Monistrol and no last train to plan around.
It also makes a longer day possible. Montserrat pairs well with a second stop: a winery in the Penedès, Barcelona's own sights, or Girona and the Costa Brava, which is what three of the private tours below do. The trade-offs are the ones above: the road estimate leaves out traffic, and the car park at the top has limited space.
If you would rather plan the day yourself than follow a set itinerary, the Montserrat private tour page also covers the chauffeur day trip, quoted on request: send the date, the pickup time and address, the number of guests and how long you want on the mountain.
Private tours that include Montserrat
For a day with your own driver and your own plan, the Barcelona to Montserrat chauffeur page covers the drive. Four private tours from Barcelona spend time at Montserrat. Each is for your group alone, up to 6 guests, at one price per group, and each includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Barcelona and a private vehicle. None lists the rack railway or the cable car among its included items.
| Tour | Duration | Price per group | Included (from the tour page) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential Montserrat: Landscape, History and Spirituality | 5 hours | €835 | Entrance to Montserrat Monastery; Guided walk through Montserrat Natural Park; Professional private guide |
| Montserrat and Boutique Wineries | 10 hours | €855 | Guided visit to Montserrat Monastery and Basilica; Guided visit to a family-run boutique winery in Penedès |
| Experience Montserrat and Barcelona with Sagrada Familia access | 10 hours | €849 | Sagrada Familia ticket (subject to availability); Old Town and Montserrat walking tours; Professional local guide |
| Montserrat, Girona and Costa Brava Private Tour | 11 hours | €845 | Guided visit to Montserrat Monastery and Basilica; Walking tour of Girona's old town and Jewish Quarter |
Essential Montserrat, at five hours, is the only one of the four spent entirely on the mountain. The wineries tour also lists a tasting of three artisanal wines and cavas in the winery's underground cellar, and the Sagrada Familia tour includes an exterior guided visit of the basilica. If the Girona day appeals, the guide to Costa Brava drive times town by town covers the coast it ends on.

Questions travelers ask
How long is the drive from Barcelona to Montserrat?
From Plaça de Catalunya to the monastery it is 60 km, about 1 h by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, checked 2026-09-30). The routed line leaves on the C-16 and ends on the BP-1121. Traffic and your pickup point change the real time, and the car park at the monastery has limited capacity.
Should I take the rack railway or the cable car up to Montserrat?
Both work. The rack railway starts at Monistrol de Montserrat, calls at Monistrol-Vila, which has a free car park, and takes 15 minutes, with adult fares of €9 one way and €15 return when checked. The Aeri cable car starts on the C-55 at km 11.5, also with free parking, and takes 5 minutes; its 2026 adult fares are €10 one way and €15 return.
When does the Escolania sing at Montserrat?
From Monday to Friday the boys' choir sings the Salve and the Virolai at 13:00 in the basilica, and the Escolania's own site says a reservation is required. On Sundays the boys sing at the Conventual Mass, listed at 11:00, also by reservation. The boys' choir does not sing on Saturdays, and times change with celebrations and the school calendar.
What are the opening hours of the basilica and La Moreneta?
Montserrat Visita lists the basilica as open from 7:00 to 20:00, and the Throne of Our Lady, where La Moreneta is enthroned, from 8:00 to 10:30 and from 12:00 to 18:25 (checked October 2026). Because the Throne closes in the late morning, plan an early visit or one after midday.
Can you get to Montserrat without a car?
Yes. R5 trains leave Barcelona-Plaça Espanya every hour, and the Aeri's operator puts the journey to its station at 1 hour; from there take the cable car, or stay on to Monistrol de Montserrat for the rack railway. Montserrat Visita also lists an Autocars Julià bus from beside Sants station at 9:15, €6.25 one way when checked.
Which private tours from Barcelona include Montserrat?
Four: Essential Montserrat: Landscape, History and Spirituality (5 hours, €835 per group), Montserrat and Boutique Wineries (10 hours, €855), Experience Montserrat and Barcelona with Sagrada Familia access (10 hours, €849) and the Montserrat, Girona and Costa Brava Private Tour (11 hours, €845). All are for up to 6 guests, with hotel pickup and drop-off in Barcelona.
