What the Montserrat day trip covers

Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain range in Catalonia, part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. Its highest summit, Sant Jeroni, stands at 1,236 meters. On the mountain is the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat, founded in 1025 and rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries, which enshrines the Virgin of Montserrat.

Visitors reach the monastery by road, by train and rack railway, or by cable car. A chauffeur day trip does the whole day by road: collection at your hotel or apartment in Barcelona, the drive up to the monastery, time on the mountain at your own pace, and the drive back to your door, with no timetable or change of train to plan around.

If you would rather have a guide and a set itinerary, the private tours below include Montserrat and are booked online. For a day planned around you, tell us the date, the pickup time and how long you want on the mountain, and we reply with a quote.

Questions about a Montserrat day trip

Is the road up to Montserrat a long drive from Barcelona?

Not long: Montserrat is about 60 km from Plaça de Catalunya by road, about 1 h each way without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026), by the C-16 and the BP-1121. The real time depends on traffic and on where in Barcelona you are collected.

Can we hike to Sant Jeroni, the summit, during the day?

Yes, on foot. Sant Jeroni is Montserrat's highest summit at 1,236 m, and Wikipedia) says hiking trails reach it from the top of the Sant Joan funicular, from the monastery or from the base of the mountain. Tell us how long you plan to be on the mountain, and the quote covers that day.

Where in the basilica is La Moreneta?

In the upper section of the basilica's apse. The monastery's visitor site says the image, a 12th-century Romanesque polychrome carving, was enthroned there in a silver altarpiece in 1947.

Can we visit a Penedès winery on the way back from Montserrat?

Yes. Add it to your request and it is quoted as part of the day. The Penedès day trip has more on the wine area, and the private tours on this page include one that pairs Montserrat with a family-run Penedès winery and a guide.
