One border, many destinations

North to La Jonquera, then east or west

Every route in this directory leaves Spain the same way: north on the AP-7 to La Jonquera, where the motorway hands over to the French A 9 beside the border village of Le Perthus. What changes is how far you go after that. Close to the border are Perpignan, the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Orientales, and Collioure on the Côte Vermeille. Farther on, Carcassonne and Toulouse lie inland along the A 61, and Montpellier stands a little back from the sea on the A 9. All five are in the Occitanie region. Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur takes in Marseille, which Wikipedia calls the oldest city in France, and the Riviera resorts of Cannes and Nice. Beyond Nice is Monaco, a sovereign city-state bordered by France on three sides, with a page of its own.

Each destination has a route page with its own road estimate from Plaça de Catalunya. If your address in France is somewhere else, the France page covers it, quoted for the address you send. Andorra, the other country within reach of Barcelona by road, has its own Andorra hub, and long drives that stay in Spain are on the long-distance hub.

Planning a journey across the border

One crossing, then two directions

All the routes here cross into France on the motorway at La Jonquera. On the French side, the A 9 runs north near the coast to Narbonne. There the A 61, which Wikipedia calls the Autoroute des Deux Mers, branches west to Carcassonne and Toulouse, while the routes to Montpellier, Provence and the Riviera stay on the A 9 and then add the A 54 and the A 7, and the A 8 for Cannes, Nice and Monaco.

French traffic forecasts

Bison Futé, France's public road information service, publishes daily traffic forecasts and a color-coded calendar of busy travel days (Bison Futé). Look at it before you fix a date in the summer holidays or on a long weekend.

A long day to the Riviera

The Riviera routes are the longest on this hub. By the route estimates from Plaça de Catalunya, without traffic, Cannes is 638 km, about 6 h 45 min, Nice 664 km, about 7 h 5 min, and Monaco 685 km, about 7 h 25 min. Breaks come on top: Spain's traffic authority, the DGT, advises a stop every 2 hours or 200 km. If you would rather spend a night on the way, in Montpellier or Marseille for example, ask for the trip in two legs, with the date of each.

Questions about international journeys

Which countries can I reach by road from Barcelona through this hub?

France and Monaco. The French destinations with their own pages run from Perpignan and Collioure near the border to Nice on the Riviera, and the France page covers any other French address. Andorra, also reached by road, is on the Andorra hub.

How many hours is the French Riviera from Barcelona by road?

From Plaça de Catalunya, without traffic, Cannes is an estimated 638 km, about 6 h 45 min, Nice 664 km, about 7 h 5 min, and Monaco 685 km, about 7 h 25 min. These are OpenStreetMap road estimates, checked September 30, 2026; breaks and traffic add to them.

My destination in France has no page here. Can I still get a quote?

Send the full address with the postcode through the France page or the quote form, and the journey is quoted for that address.

Do I need a passport to travel by road from Spain to France or Monaco?

Spain and France are in the Schengen area, where the European Commission says checks at internal borders have been abolished, though countries may reintroduce them temporarily. The EU's Your Europe guide recommends always having your passport or ID card with you to prove your identity if required. For Monaco, and for passports from outside the EU, check the current rules before you travel.

What do I send for a quote for an international journey?

The pickup address in Barcelona, the full address at the other end, the date, the time you want to leave or arrive, any stop or overnight break, and the number of guests and bags. Send it by WhatsApp or with the quote form; add the return date if you are coming back by road.
