The routes

Down the coast and across Spain

This hub gathers the long drives that start in Barcelona and stay in Spain. Most of them head south along the coast. Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú are in the Garraf county, and beyond them lies the Costa Daurada: Calafell, Coma-ruga, Torredembarra, Altafulla, Tarragona, La Pineda, Salou, PortAventura World and Cambrils, with Reus a short way inland.

The longer routes reach eight cities that each have a page of their own: Zaragoza and Huesca in Aragón, Pamplona in Navarre, San Sebastián and Bilbao in the Basque Country, Madrid, and Valencia and Alicante in the Valencian Community. Each route page gives the road distance and driving time from Plaça de Catalunya, routed with OpenStreetMap data and without traffic, with the date it was checked.

Journeys north of the city have hubs of their own: Andorra, with its parishes and ski areas, and the Costa Brava. Journeys that begin at the airport are on the Barcelona Airport transfer hub. Every journey is quoted on request.

Planning a long drive

Two ways out of Barcelona

The routed estimates on this page leave the city in one of two directions. The coast routes and the routes to Valencia and Alicante take the C-31 and C-32 through the Garraf, and the longer ones continue south on the AP-7. The routes to Huesca, Zaragoza, Pamplona, San Sebastián, Bilbao and Madrid leave by the B-23 and head west on the A-2 or the AP-2. Every estimate starts at Plaça de Catalunya and leaves out traffic, so a pickup elsewhere in the city changes it.

Breaks on the way

Spain's traffic authority, the DGT, advises drivers to stop every 2 hours or every 200 km, for at least 20 to 30 minutes. On the Madrid estimate, about 616 km and 6 h 50 min without traffic, that comes to three stops, so allow an hour or more on top of the driving time. None of the estimates here include stops. If you would like a meal or a visit on the way, Zaragoza lies on the routed line to Madrid and to Bilbao, and Huesca on the line to Pamplona. Add the stop to your request with how long you want to stay.

Bags and what to send

Count the bags before you ask: the number of suitcases, plus anything large such as golf bags, a stroller or sports equipment, shapes the vehicle the journey needs. On a drive of several hours your bags ride with you the whole way, so list everything, including what you want to reach during the trip.

Around a flight, a train or a check-in

When the drive ends at an airport or a station in another city, work back from the time you need to be there. The airline or the train operator sets its own deadline for check-in or boarding; add the driving time, the breaks and a margin for traffic around the cities at both ends. When the drive ends at a hotel, check the hotel's check-in time, and if you will arrive early, ask whether it can keep your bags. For PortAventura World, look at the park's opening times for your date before you pick a departure time.

Questions about long-distance journeys

How long is the drive from Barcelona to Madrid?

By road, Madrid is an estimated 616 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 6 h 50 min without traffic, on a routed line by the AP-2 and A-2 that passes Zaragoza. This is an OpenStreetMap road estimate, checked September 30, 2026. Breaks, traffic and the exact addresses add to the real time. The Barcelona to Madrid page has the details.

How far are Sitges, Tarragona and Salou from Barcelona?

From Plaça de Catalunya, Sitges is an estimated 39 km, about 40 min, Tarragona about 95 km, about 1 h 20 min, and Salou about 106 km, about 1 h 25 min, by road without traffic. These are OpenStreetMap estimates, checked September 30, 2026. All three routes run through the Garraf on the C-31 and C-32, and the Tarragona and Salou routes go on along the AP-7.

Should we plan stops on a drive of several hours?

Spain's traffic authority, the DGT, advises drivers to stop every 2 hours or every 200 km, for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The driving times on this page are routed estimates with no stops in them, so a break, a meal or a visit adds to them. If you want a stop on the way, put it in your request with how long you would like to stay.

Where are the journeys to Andorra and the Costa Brava?

On their own hubs. Andorra, its parishes and its ski areas are on the Andorra hub, starting with the Barcelona to Andorra transfer. The coast north of Barcelona is on the Costa Brava hub.

How do I ask for a quote for a long-distance journey?

Send the pickup address in Barcelona, the address at the other end, the date, the time you want to leave or to arrive, any stops on the way, and the number of guests and bags, by WhatsApp or with the quote form. If you need the journey back on another day, add its date. We reply with a quote for that journey.
