What the journey covers

Alicante, seat of its own province, ranks second among the cities of the Valencian Community, behind València. It grew as a Mediterranean port, and the castle of Santa Bárbara still looks down on the harbor from Mount Benacantil. People go there from Barcelona for a stay by the sea, a move south with all their belongings, a meeting, or a flight from Alicante Airport, which Wikipedia calls the busiest airport in the Valencian Community.

The route estimate on this page is 534 km, about 6 h by road without traffic. Two coastal motorways, the C-31 and C-32, lead southwest to the AP-7, which the estimate then follows for roughly 250 km down the coast, before the A-7 skirts the west side of València. From there the A-35 heads inland past Xàtiva, the short A-33 links across to the A-31, the motorway that joins Madrid and Alicante, and the last stretch runs past Villena and Elda down to the sea. Spain's traffic directorate, the DGT, recommends stopping every two hours or 200 km for at least 20 to 30 minutes, so a trip of this length has two or three natural breaks.

Start of the journey

Pickup in Barcelona

The journey begins at the Barcelona address in your request: a hotel, an apartment you are leaving, your home or an office. Give the hour you would like to set off, or the hour you must reach Alicante, and the quote is planned for that day.

If the trip starts at Barcelona Airport or at Barcelona Sants, name the terminal and flight, or the train, as the pickup.

End of the journey

Arrival in Alicante/Alacant

The journey ends at the address you give in Alicante: a hotel near the Explanada de España, an apartment above El Postiguet beach, a home or an office. Going on by plane? Give Alicante Airport and your departure time. By train? Give Alicante railway station, which has long-distance Renfe services as well as Cercanías commuter trains.

In Alicante

  1. Santa Bárbara Castle

Why book a private chauffeur

  1. A day on the road, planned with you

About 6 h of driving without traffic, plus the breaks the DGT recommends, fills most of a day. Tell us the hour you want to arrive in Alicante and the plan is built back from it.

  2. Belongings for a long stay

Moving south for a season or more? List the suitcases, boxes and anything bulky in your request, so the quote is worked out for the whole load.

  3. Xàtiva or Villena on the way

The routed line passes about 5 km from Xàtiva's castle and right beside Villena, where the Castillo de la Atalaya stands. Ask for a stop in either and say how long you want there.

  4. Straight to the airport if you fly on

Give Alicante Airport and your flight time as the drop-off, and the departure from Barcelona is planned to reach it with a margin.

Return from Alicante/Alacant to Barcelona

Questions about the Barcelona to Alicante/Alacant journey

Can Barcelona to Alicante be driven in a single day?

Yes, as one long day. The road estimate from Plaça de Catalunya to Alicante/Alacant is about 534 km and about 6 h (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026), with no stops counted. Spain's DGT advises a break of at least 20 to 30 minutes every two hours or 200 km, which adds two or three pauses to the journey.

Does the route go through València?

Not through the center. The routed line follows the A-7 around the west side of València, about 10 km from the city, and then turns inland on the A-35. If you want to stop in València for lunch or a meeting, add it to your request.

What is there to see in Xàtiva or Villena?

Xàtiva, in the province of València, is the birthplace of the Borgia popes Callixtus III and Alexander VI, and its castle on the Bernisa range was once called the strongest fortress in the Kingdom of Valencia (Wikipedia). Villena, in the province of Alicante, has the 11th-century Castillo de la Atalaya and the Treasure of Villena in its archaeological museum (Wikipedia). Either stop goes in the request with the time you want to spend.

We fly out of Alicante. Can we go straight to the airport?

Yes. Give the airport as the drop-off with your flight number and departure time, and the start in Barcelona is planned around it. Alicante Airport is the busiest in the Valencian Community (Wikipedia). A hotel in town, a home on the coast or the railway station work the same way, since the quote follows the address you send.
