Blanes to Portbou

From Blanes to the French border

The Costa Brava runs from Blanes to Portbou on the French border. The Generalitat de Catalunya's Costa Brava guide gives it 206 kilometers of coastline, with rocky coves, cliffs, wetlands and long sandy beaches, and divides it into three coastal counties, la Selva, Baix Empordà and Alt Empordà, plus the inland Gironès and Pla de l'Estany. The journalist Ferran Agulló coined the name in 1908.

Each stretch has its own character. La Selva, in the south, takes in Blanes, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar, where the walled Vila Vella stands above the bay. In the Baix Empordà, which the guide calls the heartland of the Costa Brava, the coast runs from Sant Feliu de Guíxols past Platja d'Aro, Palamós and Begur to L'Estartit, with the former fishing villages of Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell on the shore and the fortified towns of Pals and Peratallada inland. The northernmost towns are Cadaqués, El Port de la Selva, Llançà, Colera and Portbou.

This hub groups the Costa Brava journeys in our directory: transfers from Barcelona to each town that has its own page, grouped by county from south to north, routes from Barcelona Airport and Girona-Costa Brava Airport, and chauffeur day trips.

Planning a Costa Brava journey

South, center or north

The southern towns of la Selva are the shortest drive from Barcelona, and the north around Cadaqués and Portlligat is the longest; the By road from Barcelona panel gives the estimates for both ends. In the center, the Generalitat guide says the coast from Sant Feliu de Guíxols to L'Estartit can be explored almost entirely on coastal paths, among them the coastal path at S'Agaró, an early 20th-century promenade in the garden town that the architect Rafael Masó designed in 1920. Off L'Estartit lie the Medes Islands, part of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park, which runs along the shore from Pals north to L'Escala.

Flying in

Aena says Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) was built on land in Aiguaviva and Vilobí d'Onyar, south of Girona. Routes from it and from Barcelona Airport are grouped above, and one of the questions below gives the road estimates from both airports.

Villas and addresses outside the towns

If you are staying in a villa or a property outside a town center, send the full address or the property's name with your request, so the quote is for that door.

Questions about Costa Brava transfers

Where does the Costa Brava start and end?

It runs from Blanes, where the town's tourism office places its start at the Sa Palomera rock, to Portbou on the French border. Girona is not on the coast, but the Generalitat's Costa Brava guide calls it the capital of the Costa Brava region, so its routes are listed here, together with Figueres, home of the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

Should I fly into Girona-Costa Brava Airport or Barcelona Airport?

Both airports have route pages, and a journey from either one is quoted on its details. By road, the Costa Brava towns in our route data are an estimated 35 km (Lloret de Mar, about 35 min) to 91 km (Portlligat, about 1 h 25 min) from Girona-Costa Brava Airport, and 89 km (Blanes, about 1 h 15 min) to 188 km (Portlligat, about 2 h 30 min) from Barcelona Airport. These are OpenStreetMap road estimates without traffic, checked September 30, 2026.

What should I send for a Costa Brava transfer quote?

The pickup address, the full address on the coast (or the property's name, for a villa outside a town), the date and time, and the number of guests and bags. If you are flying into Barcelona or Girona, add the flight number. Send it by WhatsApp or with the request form at the foot of this page, and we reply with a quote for that journey.

How do I plan a visit to the Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat?

Every visit to the Salvador Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat, Cadaqués, must be booked in advance for a set date and time. Book the visit first, then ask for a Barcelona to Cadaqués transfer or a Costa Brava chauffeur day trip and give the visit time in your request. The Dalí Theatre-Museum, opened in 1974 in the former Figueres Municipal Theatre, has its own Dalí Museum chauffeur day trip.

Is there a private tour of the Costa Brava from Barcelona?

Three of our private tours stop in named Costa Brava towns, each with hotel pickup in Barcelona, a guide and a set price per group. Medieval Girona and Costa Brava visits Girona, Pals and Calella de Palafrugell. Costa Brava, Tossa de Mar and Panoramic Boat Ride goes by boat from Lloret de Mar to Tossa de Mar and ends in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The Roman and Greek heritage of Costa Brava with Panoramic Boat Ride visits Empúries and Sant Martí d'Empúries, with a boat ride to the Medes Islands. For your own route, ask for a Costa Brava chauffeur day trip.
