What the transfer covers
Sant Feliu de Guíxols is a town of the Baix Empordà coast that grew with the cork industry and the sea, as the Generalitat de Catalunya's Costa Brava guide puts it, and it still keeps its old shipyards. Its Benedictine monastery is documented from 968, and in front of it stands the Porta Ferrada, a pre-Romanesque gateway of three horseshoe arches that gave its name to a summer music festival first held in 1958. On the hill of Sant Elm, the journalist Ferran Agulló coined the name Costa Brava in 1908. Along the bay, the Passeig del Mar opened in 1833 between the old town and the beach, and the Moorish-style casino La Constància dates from 1888.
The town's tie to Girona is an old one. From 1892 to 1969 a narrow-gauge railway, the Carrilet, carried cork sheets and stoppers from the factories of Cassà de la Selva and Llagostera to and from the port of Sant Feliu; its track bed is now a greenway for walkers and cyclists. The road estimate uses much the same corridor at the end: it leaves the AP-7 for the C-35, joins the C-65 at Llagostera, stays on it through Santa Cristina d'Aro, and comes into town on the Carretera de Girona.
