Montserrat on a private tour

Montserrat is about 60 km from Plaça de Catalunya, roughly an hour by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, checked September 30, 2026). Monks from Ripoll built a Benedictine monastery on the mountain in 1025, and its basilica keeps La Moreneta, a 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Virgin that Pope Leo XIII proclaimed patron saint of Catalonia in 1881. The massif around it was protected as a natural park in 1987, and its rock is made of pebbles bound by a natural cement of sand and clay, which makes it hard and resistant to erosion.

Four private tours from Barcelona go to Montserrat, and on each one the vehicle and the guide are there for your group only. Essential Montserrat: Landscape, History and Spirituality is the five-hour visit: the monastery and basilica, La Moreneta and a guided walk in the natural park. The other three last ten or eleven hours and pair the mountain with a second destination: a family-run winery in the Penedès, the Sagrada Família and Barcelona's Old Town, or Girona and the Costa Brava. All four collect you from your hotel in Barcelona and bring you back there, and all are priced per group.

Private tours that include Montserrat

Essential Montserrat is the only tour spent entirely on the mountain; the other three add a second destination. Each is for your group only, priced per group and booked online, and every private tour is listed on Private Tours Barcelona.

How the day works

The four tours follow the same outline, and the three longer ones add a second destination to the day. To plan your own day at Montserrat instead, ask for a chauffeur day trip to Montserrat, quoted on request.

  1. Book the tour online

Choose one of the four tours, the date and the number of guests, up to six, and book it with the tour's Book button.

  2. Pickup at your hotel

The tour starts at your hotel in Barcelona, and the pickup time is confirmed before the day.

  3. The drive to Montserrat

You travel in the tour's private vehicle for the whole day. The one-way estimate in the route panel is for the drive from Plaça de Catalunya.

  4. On the mountain

Your guide leads the visit to the monastery and basilica, where La Moreneta is kept, and a walk in the natural park on the tours that list one.

  5. Back to Barcelona

The day ends at your hotel. The three longer tours also visit a Penedès winery, the sights of Barcelona, or Girona and the Costa Brava, before or after the mountain.

Questions about the Montserrat tours

Which tour is only about Montserrat?

Essential Montserrat: Landscape, History and Spirituality, a five-hour tour. It includes entrance to the monastery, a guided walk in the natural park and a stop at La Moreneta, and it lists the Holy Cave as an optional stop. The path to the Holy Cave is on uneven, sloping ground, so mention any mobility concerns before the day.

How far from Barcelona is Montserrat by road?

From Plaça de Catalunya to the monastery at Montserrat, the road estimate is about 60 km, about 1 h each way without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). The real time depends on traffic and on where you are collected.

What do the longer Montserrat tours add?

Each pairs the mountain with a second destination and lasts ten or eleven hours: a family-run winery in the Penedès with a tasting of three wines and cavas, the Sagrada Família and Barcelona's Old Town, or Girona's old town and the Costa Brava coast.

Are tickets and meals included?

Essential Montserrat includes entrance to the monastery, and the tour with the Sagrada Família lists a Sagrada Família ticket, subject to availability. Meals are not part of any of the four. Drinks are not included either, except the three wines and cavas tasted at the Penedès winery. Each tour page lists exactly what is and is not included.

Do the tours use the rack railway or the cable car?

Neither is part of the four itineraries, which use the tour's private vehicle for the whole day. Both are public ways up the mountain: the FGC rack railway runs about five kilometers from Monistrol-Vila to the monastery in 15 minutes, and the Aeri de Montserrat cable car, which entered service in 1930, covers a 1,350-meter journey in about 5 minutes.

Can we plan our own day at Montserrat instead?

Yes, with a chauffeur day trip to Montserrat: a vehicle and driver for the day on your own schedule, quoted on request. Send the date, the pickup address, the number of guests and how long you want on the mountain with the quote form or by WhatsApp.
