Planning a winery day from Barcelona

Catalonia has twelve wine denominations of origin, from Alella and the Penedès to the Priorat and the Terra Alta. This page is for a day of winery visits from Barcelona in whichever of them you like, with a driver, so that everyone in the group can taste and nobody has to take the wheel afterward.

West of the city, the Penedès has a day trip page of its own; it pairs still wines with cava, the sparkling wine made by the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle and at least nine months on the lees. Most cava vineyards are in Catalonia, above all around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, which the Catalan wine institute INCAVI calls the capital of cava. DO Alella is a small appellation: just over 200 hectares of vines on both sides of the Coastal Range, in the Maresme and the Vallès Oriental, where the white pansa blanca grows in a sandy soil of weathered granite called sauló. Inland, the Pla de Bages lies at the foot of Montserrat, with dry-stone vineyard huts and its own white grape, picapoll, so a cellar there fits well into a Montserrat day. Further north, the DO Empordà grows garnatxa and carinyena around Figueres.

Send the cellars, the visit times you have and where you would like lunch, and you get a quote for the vehicle and driver for that day, from your address in Barcelona and back.

Wine areas to choose from

  1. Cava and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Cava is a quality sparkling wine made by the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle and at least nine months on the lees. Most of its vineyards are in Catalonia, especially around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the capital of cava.

  2. DO Alella

Vineyards on both sides of the Coastal Range in the Maresme and the Vallès Oriental, across 28 municipalities and just over 200 hectares. Pansa blanca is its signature white grape, grown in sauló, a well-drained sandy soil of weathered granite; the Roman authors Pliny and Martial already praised the wine.

  3. DO Pla de Bages

Thirty-five municipalities of the Bages and the Moianès, at the foot of Montserrat. Dry-stone vineyard huts and wine vats recall the time when this was the area with the most vines in Catalonia, and picapoll is the native white grape. It became a DO in 1995.

Questions about a Catalan wine country day trip

Which wine area should we choose?

It depends on what you want to taste. The Penedès has still wines and, around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, cava; Alella is a small appellation known for the white pansa blanca; the Pla de Bages pairs with a visit to Montserrat; and the Empordà lies in the north, near Figueres.

How close to Barcelona are the Penedès cellars?

The estimate for the Penedès runs from Plaça de Catalunya to Vilafranca del Penedès, a center of the Penedès wine trade: about 54 km, about 45 min by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). The cellars spread out from there, and for the other wine areas the quote works out the drive from your plan.

How is cava made, and from which grapes?

By the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle and at least nine months on the lees. The authorized grapes include the whites Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Subirat Parent and Chardonnay, and the reds Trepat, Monastrell, Garnatxa and Pinot Noir (INCAVI). The DO Cava reaches beyond the Penedès too, into the Alt Camp, the Conca de Barberà and the Costers del Segre.

What are the stone huts in the Pla de Bages vineyards?

Dry-stone huts and vats beside the vines, which INCAVI calls reminders of the time when the Bages had more vineyards than any other part of Catalonia. The DO groups 35 municipalities, the whole Bages county and five in the Moianès, and native grapes such as picapoll give it its identity.

Can we combine a winery with Montserrat?

Yes. The Pla de Bages lies among mountains that include Montserrat, and a Penedès cellar is another option for the same day; add either to a Montserrat day trip. With a guide, the private tour on this page visits Montserrat and a family-run Penedès winery.
