Chauffeur day trip from Barcelona
Figueres and the Alt Empordà in one day from Barcelona: the castle and museums of the county town, a stop out on the plain or by the sea, and the drive home. Quoted on request.
Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà, a county town on the Empordà plain about 15 km inland from the Mediterranean, at the foot of the Pyrenees. Dalí was born here, and his Theatre-Museum has a day trip of its own. This one takes in the rest of the town and the country around it.
Above the streets rises Sant Ferran Castle, a fortress built between 1753 and 1808 over 32 hectares, with vast cisterns underground. The parliament of the Spanish Republic met there for the last time in 1939, in the final days of the Civil War. In town, the Empordà Museum on La Rambla follows the county from prehistoric finds and Greek pottery to Dalí and Ángeles Santos, and the Toy Museum of Catalonia fills three floors with toys from the late 19th century to today. Narcís Monturiol, a pioneer of the submarine, was also born in Figueres.
The afternoon can leave town. In the north of the county, the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes looks over Cap de Creus from the Serra de Rodes. Toward the coast, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà protect wetlands between the mouths of the Muga and the Fluvià, and 35 of the county's municipalities belong to the DO Empordà wine appellation. The day starts and ends at your door in Barcelona, with the stops you pick quoted as one trip.
In Figueres and the Alt Empordà
Built between 1753 and 1808 to a design by the engineer Juan Martín Zermeño, it covers 32 hectares inside a 3,120-meter perimeter. Its underground cisterns are open to visitors, and the walls look out over Figueres and the Empordà.

A Catalan Romanesque monastery of the 10th and 11th centuries on a peak of the Serra de Rodes, by the sea in the north of the Alt Empordà, with wide views of Cap de Creus. From the 11th to the 14th century it was the main spiritual center of the county of Empúries.

Created in 1983 on the Empordà plain between the mouths of the Fluvià and the Muga. With the Ebro and Llobregat deltas, its wetlands are among the main bird habitats in Catalonia; the visitor center, El Cortalet, is in Castelló d'Empúries.

Sant Ferran Castle and its underground cisterns, the Empordà Museum on La Rambla, and the Toy Museum of Catalonia, whose industrial toys and games run from the late 19th century to the present. Dalí's birthplace at Carrer Monturiol 6 is now a museum too.
The north wind of the Empordà. The DO Empordà wine appellation describes gusts that often pass 120 km/h and counts the wind as good for the health of the vines. On a windy day, bring a layer for the castle walls and the viewpoints.
Yes, name them in the request. The DO Empordà is known for garnatxa and carinyena and for Garnatxa de l'Empordà, a naturally sweet wine; the winery chauffeur page helps plan a wine day. For coves and seaside villages, see the Costa Brava day trip.
