Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum fit comfortably into one day from Barcelona: the drive is an estimated 138 km, about 1 h 40 min without traffic, and the museum says a full visit generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Girona's old town, 101 km and about 1 h 15 min from Barcelona by the same estimate, can be added on the way up or on the way back.

What shapes the day is the museum's calendar. Outside July and August it is closed on Mondays apart from a few listed dates, and entry ends 45 minutes before closing time. Every drive time here is an OpenStreetMap road routing (OSRM) estimate without traffic, from Plaça de Catalunya, checked on September 30, 2026.

The drive: Barcelona, Girona and Figueres

From Barcelona (Plaça de Catalunya) to Distance and time Roads on the route
Girona 101 km, about 1 h 15 min C-31, C-33, AP-7
Figueres 138 km, about 1 h 40 min C-31, C-33, AP-7, N-IIa
Dalí Theatre-Museum, Figueres 139 km, about 1 h 40 min C-31, C-33, AP-7, N-IIa

Both cities are on the AP-7 north of Barcelona, and Girona is the nearer of the two. The road estimates used in this guide have no Girona to Figueres figure, so none is given here; the figures above are measured outward from Barcelona.

The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí's own directions by car are the AP-7 (Barcelona to La Jonquera) motorway to exit 3 (Figueres Nord), or the N-II national road. It adds that the museum is in the city center, in a traffic-restricted area, and it publishes a car-park map, so plan to cover the last stretch on foot.

Dalí Theatre-Museum opening hours, as published today

The museum opened in 1974 in the former Figueres Municipal Theatre, which had been destroyed in a fire, and the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí calls it "the world's largest surrealist object". The Foundation's timeline records Dalí's birth in Figueres in 1904, and the Generalitat's Costa Brava guide notes that he is buried in the museum. These are the opening hours the Foundation lists at the time of checking (October 2026):

Period Open Hours
January 1 to March 22 Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 am to 6:00 pm
March 23 to May 31 Tuesday to Sunday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
June 1 to 30 Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 am to 6:00 pm
July 1 to August 31 Every day 9:00 am to 8:00 pm
September 1 to 30 Tuesday to Sunday 9:30 am to 6:00 pm
October 1 to December 31 Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 am to 6:00 pm

Entry to the museum and the ticket office ends 45 minutes before closing time, and the rooms close 15 minutes before it. The museum lists exceptional openings on January 5, March 30, April 6, May 25, October 12, November 9 and December 7, all Mondays in 2026. It is closed on January 1 and December 25, and on December 24 it closes at 3:00 pm.

Tickets and your entry time

At the time of checking (October 2026), the Foundation listed general admission from €18.50 and reduced admission from €15.00 (for example for ages 9 to 17 and visitors aged 65 and over), with free entry for children aged 0 to 8. It recommends buying online and says advance booking is always advisable: there is a ticket desk at the main entrance, but availability depends on the museum's capacity. Download the confirmation, because the reservation code is shown at the ticket desk or the entrance.

Plan the drive around the time on your booking. Asked whether you can enter at a time other than the one booked, the Foundation's FAQ answers that if you do not collect your tickets at the stated time, the reservation is cancelled and admission depends on availability.

Inside, and what not to bring

Visits are self-guided, there is no recommended route, and the Foundation says seeing the whole museum generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The route takes in the former theatre (rooms 1 to 18), the temporary exhibition rooms (19 to 22) and the jewelry Dalí designed (rooms 23 and 24). None of the three Dalí museums has a café or restaurant, so plan lunch in town. Objects larger than 35 x 35 x 25 cm, suitcases and bags worn on the back are not allowed inside; there is a left-luggage service, but bulky items cannot be checked.

Adding Girona's old town

Girona comes first on the road north, 101 km and about 1 h 15 min from Barcelona against 138 km for Figueres, and the R11 railway stops there before Figueres too. Girona's tourist office describes a historic city of more than 2,000 years in two fortified enclosures: the Força Vella, which dates back to the Roman foundation, and the Medieval Quarter. A short visit can take in four places:

  • The Call. The Jewish Quarter inside the Força Vella, a maze of narrow streets and patios that the tourist office calls one of the best preserved Jewish quarters in the world.
  • The cathedral. Reached by a Baroque staircase of almost 100 steps, with a single Gothic nave that the Generalitat guide describes as the widest in medieval European architecture. The tourist office lists opening at 10:00 am from Monday to Saturday and at noon on Sundays and public holidays, and closure on December 25, January 1 and Good Friday.
  • The wall walk. A walkway along sections of what the tourist office calls the longest Carolingian walls in Europe (9th century), open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm from September to May and to 11:00 pm from June to August.
  • The Onyar. For the tourist office, the brightly painted houses overlooking the river are the city's most emblematic image; it also points to the Palanques Vermelles bridge, built by the Eiffel company.

Three ways to order the day

Figueres only

The simplest plan. Book a museum time from late morning, allow about 1 h 40 min for the drive, and keep lunch for after the visit, since the museums have no café. With time to spare, the Generalitat guide describes the Sant Ferran Castle in Figueres as the largest fortress of its kind in Europe, an 18th-century military fortress on a hill above the Empordà plain.

Girona in the morning, Figueres in the afternoon

This is the order the private tour below follows. It is easiest in July and August, when the museum is open every day until 8:00 pm. In the other months it closes at 6:00 pm and entry ends 45 minutes earlier, so leave Barcelona early and book the museum for early afternoon.

Figueres in the morning, Girona in the afternoon

Use this order on Sundays and public holidays, when Girona Cathedral opens only at noon. See the museum soon after it opens (10:30 am from October 1 to March 22), then drive back south to Girona; the wall walk stays open until 9:00 pm from September to May.

On Mondays outside July and August the museum is closed except on the dates listed above, so pick another day or make Girona the whole trip.

By train instead

For a museum-only day from central Barcelona, the train is a fair alternative. The Foundation lists the R11 regional train from Barcelona Sants to Figueres station, Renfe's high-speed AVE and Avant trains to Figueres-Vilafant station, which has a shuttle bus to the city center, and TGV trains from Paris to the same station. Rodalies de Catalunya says the R11 runs from Barcelona via Girona and Figueres to Portbou and Cerbère, with some trains ending at Girona or Figueres, so the two cities can be combined by rail. Check timetables with the operator before you travel.

The Medieval Girona and Dali Museum private tour

The Medieval Girona and Dali Museum in Figueres private tour covers both cities in one day: 10 hours, €825 per group, for up to 6 guests. Its included items are hotel pickup and drop-off in Barcelona, a private vehicle and driver for the full day, a professional private guide, a guided walking tour through Girona's medieval old town, the entrance ticket to the Dalí Theatre-Museum and a private guided visit of the Dalí Museum. Food and drinks and optional gratuities are not included.

The itinerary runs Girona first (the medieval old town, the Call, the cathedral and the Onyar) and then Figueres and the Theatre-Museum, before the return to Barcelona.

When a car with a driver fits better

For one or two people seeing only the museum, the train is hard to argue with. A car with a driver earns its place when you want both cities without connections in between, when you are traveling with children or older relatives, or when the day continues to the coast: Cadaqués is an estimated 170 km, about 2 h 10 min from Barcelona, and our Barcelona to the Costa Brava drive times guide has the town by town figures.

Chauffeur Hire Barcelona quotes every journey on request, day trips included. Send the route and stops, the date and pickup time, the museum time you booked, and the number of guests and bags. Questions travelers ask

How long is the drive from Barcelona to Figueres?

By road, Figueres is an estimated 138 km, about 1 h 40 min from Plaça de Catalunya without traffic, and the Dalí Theatre-Museum 139 km, about 1 h 40 min. The route uses the C-31, C-33 and AP-7 and then the N-IIa. These are OpenStreetMap road estimates checked September 30, 2026, and real journeys take longer in traffic.

Is the Dalí Theatre-Museum open on Mondays?

Only from July 1 to August 31, when it opens every day from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. The rest of the year it opens Tuesday to Sunday, plus the exceptional dates it lists: January 5, March 30, April 6, May 25, October 12, November 9 and December 7. It is closed on January 1 and December 25.

Do I need to book Dalí Theatre-Museum tickets in advance?

The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí says it is always advisable to book in advance and recommends buying online. There is a ticket desk at the main entrance, but availability depends on the museum's capacity. Download the confirmation, since you show the reservation code at the desk or entrance, and plan your arrival around the time on your booking.

How long does a visit to the Dalí Theatre-Museum take?

The Foundation says it generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours to see the whole museum. Visits are self-guided, with no recommended route. Entry to the museum and the ticket office ends 45 minutes before closing time and the rooms close 15 minutes before it, so a late booking leaves less time inside.

Can I visit Girona and Figueres in one day?

Yes. Girona is an estimated 101 km, about 1 h 15 min from Barcelona, and Figueres 138 km, about 1 h 40 min, both on the AP-7. Put Girona first in July and August, when the museum is open until 8:00 pm, and Figueres first on Sundays, when Girona Cathedral opens at noon. The Medieval Girona and Dali Museum in Figueres private tour covers both in 10 hours.

Can I see all three Dalí museums in one day?

No. The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí says you need at least two days, with at least one 40 km trip from Figueres to Portlligat in Cadaqués and another from Figueres to Púbol. Visits to the House-Museum in Portlligat must also be booked in advance for a set date and time, so it works best on a separate day.
