The high-speed train is quicker between the two city centers: Renfe's October 2026 timetable runs Barcelona-Sants to Madrid Puerta de Atocha in 3 h 02 min on most non-stop trains. By road, Madrid is 616 km, about 6 h 50 min of driving without traffic. A car with a driver wins when door to door, bags, a group or a stop on the way matter more than speed.

Train and car side by side

The two options answer different questions. The train is about speed between two central stations; the car is about the whole trip, from the first address to the last. The table compares them on the points that usually decide it, and the sections below give the detail and the sources.

The high-speed train: operators, stations and journey times

Three companies run high-speed trains between Barcelona and Madrid: Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo. Spain's markets and competition regulator, the CNMC, reports passenger shares for all three on the corridor. This guide uses the timetables that Renfe and Ouigo publish; for Iryo's trains, check its own site.

Renfe's trains run from Barcelona-Sants to Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes. Its open timetable data, updated on 3 October 2026, has 26 trains from Sants to Madrid on Tuesday 6 October, the first at 5:40 and the last at 20:00, and 16 on Saturday 10 October. The journey time depends on the stops:

Renfe train Stops between Sants and Atocha Timetabled time
Non-stop None 3 h 01 min to 3 h 02 min
One stop Camp de Tarragona 3 h 10 min
One stop Zaragoza Delicias 3 h 17 min
Five stops Camp de Tarragona, Lleida-Pirineus, Zaragoza Delicias, Calatayud, Guadalajara-Yebes 3 h 50 min

Weekends have fewer non-stop trains. On Sunday 11 October 2026, the quickest Renfe trip from Sants takes 3 h 17 min, with a stop at Zaragoza Delicias.

Ouigo's Barcelona to Madrid page names the same two stations, Barcelona-Sants and Madrid-Puerta de Atocha. Its timetable lists direct trains at 3 h 02 min and others that stop at Camp de Tarragona and Zaragoza Delicias.

You will still see 2 h 30 min quoted for this route, including in the descriptive text of that Ouigo page, but the October 2026 timetables do not show it. In September 2026 the CNMC said speed limits on the line had lengthened scheduled journey times, and in June it reported that incidents on the rail network had cut both supply and demand in the first quarter of 2026. Plan on the timetable for your date, not on a headline figure.

Station time, bags and fares

A train trip starts well before departure. Renfe closes the access control to each train 2 minutes before it leaves and advises arriving well ahead at large stations and at those with luggage scanners. Ouigo asks you to reach the station 30 minutes before your train leaves. Then add the ride to Sants at one end and from Atocha to your address at the other. Renfe's route page notes that an AVE or long-distance ticket includes a free trip on Cercanías, the commuter trains.

Bags are the other limit. On AVE and long-distance trains, Renfe lets each passenger bring three pieces of hand luggage, together no more than 25 kg or 290 cm, and none larger than 85 x 55 x 35 cm. Ouigo's fares include a hand bag of 27 x 36 x 15 cm and a cabin bag of 55 x 35 x 25 cm; an extra bag of up to 200 cm and 25 kg is a paid option.

Ticket prices vary by date and by train. At the time of checking (October 2026), Ouigo's route page advertised fares from €19 between Madrid and Barcelona. The CNMC's figure for what passengers actually paid on the route was higher: an average of €56 before VAT in the second quarter of 2026.

By road: 616 km on the AP-2 and the A-2

The road estimate runs from Plaça de Catalunya to central Madrid: 616 km, about 6 h 50 min by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, checked 2026-09-30). The routed line leaves Barcelona on the B-23, follows the AP-7 and then the AP-2 inland, joins the A-2 and passes Zaragoza on the Z-40. A pickup elsewhere in Barcelona, traffic around either city and any stop all change the real time.

Zaragoza sits close to halfway: 310 km, about 3 h 40 min by road without traffic from Plaça de Catalunya, on the same routing. That makes it the obvious place to break the trip for lunch, a meeting or a walk, and many of the trains stop there as well.

A drive this long needs breaks, whoever is at the wheel. Spain's traffic authority, the DGT, advises stopping every 2 hours or every 200 km, for at least 20 to 30 minutes each time. Over 616 km that means three breaks, so the day runs longer than the driving estimate. If you start at Barcelona Airport rather than in the city, the routed estimate from Terminal 1 is 610 km, about 6 h 45 min by road without traffic.

When the train is the better choice

  • You travel light, alone or as a couple. The fastest trains take a little over 3 hours, less than half the driving estimate, and your bags fit the operators' rules.
  • Your trip starts and ends near the stations. If you are staying close to Sants and your Madrid address is close to Atocha, the legs at each end are short.
  • You want the time for work or rest. Three hours in a train seat is time you can use, with no breaks to plan.
  • Your destination is on the line itself. Renfe's trains also call at Lleida-Pirineus, Zaragoza Delicias, Calatayud and Guadalajara-Yebes.

When a car with a driver is the better choice

  • Door to door matters more than speed. The car starts at your address and ends at the one you give in Madrid, with no station, scanner or transfer in between. That counts most when either end is far from Sants or Atocha, or for travelers who would rather not change transport twice.
  • You have more bags than the trains allow. Several large suitcases each, sports equipment, display material for a fair or samples for a meeting are all easier when they never leave the car. List everything when you ask for a quote, since the number and size of the bags shapes the vehicle the journey needs.
  • You travel as a group. Train tickets are bought per passenger. A car journey is quoted on request for the route, date and number of guests you send; for larger parties, see group transportation in Barcelona.
  • You want a stop on the way. Lunch in Zaragoza, a visit or a meeting halfway can be part of the same journey. Put the stop, and how long you want to stay, in the route when you ask for the quote.

The Barcelona to Madrid chauffeur page covers this journey, and the long-distance chauffeur service lists the other cities reached by road from Barcelona.

Before you choose

  • Check the timetable for your exact date. Weekday and weekend timetables differ, and the quickest Sunday trip can be 15 minutes longer than the quickest weekday one.
  • Count the bags per person against Renfe's or Ouigo's rules before you book seats.
  • Add the time to reach the station and pass the scanner, and the time from Atocha to your address.
  • For a car, send the pickup address, the address in Madrid, the date and time, any stops, your train or flight if the trip connects with one, and the number of guests and bags.

If you are also comparing ways to get around Barcelona itself, the guide to chauffeurs, taxis, ride-hail and rental cars in Barcelona sets them side by side.
