Drive times and where the car stops

The table lists every ski area access point with a road estimate on this site, from Plaça de Catalunya and, where one exists, from Barcelona Airport Terminal 1. Estimates assume no traffic and no stops. The second column comes from each resort's own site.

From the airport, the estimates also cover Andorra la Vella, the capital: 204 km, about 2 h 50 min.

Some ski areas have no estimate here. FGC Turisme's Pirineu365 group, which includes La Molina and Boí Taüll, also brings together Vallter 2000, Espot and Port Ainé, and Vall de Núria, which no car reaches: the valley is car free, and the only way up is the Cremallera de Núria rack railway from Ribes Enllaç, where the R3 Rodalies line stops. Free car parks sit at the rack railway stations of Ribes Enllaç, Ribes Vila and Queralbs.

The Cerdanya: Masella and La Molina

Masella and La Molina, side by side in the Cerdanya, share the Alp 2500 ski area. FGC Turisme, which runs La Molina, says the Cadí-Moixeró cable car connects the 2 resorts in a ride of about 20 minutes, and a single ski pass gives access to the main ski areas of both.

The road estimate to Masella stays on the C-16, and the one to La Molina adds the C-162 and the GIV-4082 for the last stretch. Masella's access page notes that the route through the Túnel del Cadí crosses no mountain pass, while the road over the Collada de Toses avoids the tunnel toll. On the C-16 between Berga and Bagà, the Generalitat de Catalunya reports winter peaks on Friday afternoons heading north and Sunday afternoons heading south.

Masella's facilities sit at the foot of the slopes in Pla de Masella, and its Coma Oriola area, 5 km away, has the same services except ski rental. La Molina lists car parks across the resort, all with direct access to lifts and main services: Telecabina, Fontcanaleta, Pista Llarga, Roc Blanc, Alabau and Llac La Molina.

La Molina also has a rail option. Its practical information page describes a train and ski package on the R3 Rodalies line to La Molina station, with the resort's internal bus between the station and Pista Llarga.

Andorra: Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís

Grandvalira stretches across the parishes of Encamp and Canillo, with its accesses along the CG-2 road. Coming from Andorra la Vella, the first is Encamp, which Grandvalira calls its first access from Spain: the 6 km Funicamp lift leaves from the village, where 4 free communal car parks connect to the lift by the Funibus shuttle. Canillo has a cable car from the town, Soldeu, El Tarter and Grau Roig have their own car parks, and Pas de la Casa is the first access from France. Grandvalira adds that the Envalira tunnel leaves you close to the Grau Roig access.

That explains a quirk in the table: the estimates to Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu and El Tarter take the C-16 and the C-162 to the Cerdanya, cross France on the N 20, N 320 and N 22, and enter Andorra at Pas de la Casa. The estimates to Encamp and Canillo enter from Spain on the N-145. French winter rules apply on the French stretch; our guide to driving from Barcelona to Andorra covers them, along with border documents and customs allowances.

Pal Arinsal is in La Massana. Its access page sends drivers up the CG-3 from Andorra la Vella to La Massana, then along the CG-4 toward Pal or Arinsal. For Arinsal, the resort suggests parking in the town center and taking the Arinsal cable car, or parking at Prat de la Mollera and riding the Josep Serra chairlift to the central services building. For Pal, there are parking areas at the slopes with direct access to the sector, and the resort counts 10 free car parks in all.

Ordino Arcalís, the farthest Andorran ski area in these estimates, has free car parks with direct access to the slopes and a free bus from Ordino town. Its access page reminds drivers that special winter equipment is compulsory in Andorra from 1 November to 15 May.

Without a car, Grandvalira lists 3 bus companies between Barcelona and Andorra (Directbus, Andbus and ALSA), and Pal Arinsal points to local buses L5 and L6 from Andorra la Vella.

Baqueira Beret and Boí Taüll, further west

Baqueira Beret is in the Val d'Aran. Its own page sends drivers from Barcelona along the A-2 toward Lleida, the A-14 and the N-230 through Benabarre and Vielha, and gives the C-28 as the road from Vielha to the resort. The estimate on this site to Vielha follows that corridor: 313 km, about 4 h 10 min.

The estimate to Baqueira itself takes another line, the C-16, N-260, C-13 and C-28: 283 km, about 4 h from Plaça de Catalunya, or 294 km and about 4 h 10 min from Barcelona Airport Terminal 1. In winter, check the roads before choosing between them.

A car reaches Baqueira 1500, where the Telecabina car park sits in the Ruda shopping center at the foot of the slopes. The resort's slopes status page also lists Parking 1500 and Parking Tanau, and shows the state of its road access with a chains indicator. Without a car, Baqueira's page lists ALSA buses from Barcelona or Lleida to Vielha and the local VA line from Vielha, or a train to Lleida and a bus onward.

Boí Taüll, in the same Pirineu365 group as La Molina, is the longest drive from Plaça de Catalunya in the table. Its estimate follows the B-23, A-2, A-14 and N-230, then the L-500 and L-501 for the last stretch: 297 km, about 4 h 5 min to Pla de l'Ermita. The resort lists several free parking areas, including an upper car park at the base of the resort.

Skis, boots and bags

If you ask for a quote, give the number of guests and bags, and count ski bags, boot bags and board bags in that number. For Andorra, keep passports and ID cards in a small bag in the car, not in a ski bag.

Storing equipment at the resort means less to carry each day:

  • Grandvalira: closed, supervised ski storage at the entry points of its sectors, such as Costa Rodona and Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, the Funicamp in Encamp, Espiolets in Soldeu and Forn in Canillo.
  • Pal Arinsal: lockers in Arinsal, Pal, Coll de la Botella and the La Massana gondola building, for a day or the whole season.
  • Ordino Arcalís: 20 ski lockers and 24 large storage boxes at its L'Hortell base, plus lockers in the Planells area.
  • Masella: lockers at Pla de Masella, each taking 4 complete sets of skis, poles and boots.

These resorts also rent equipment, according to their sites.

Winter roads: rules and where to check

The rules change at each border. Andorra makes special winter equipment compulsory on all its roads from 1 November to 15 May, according to the Government of Andorra. In Spain, where chains are made compulsory, the DGT's magazine says only tires with the three-peak mountain symbol (3PMSF) replace them. In France, winter tires, or chains or snow socks in the car, are required in certain mountain communes from 1 November to 31 March, which can apply on the French roads to Pas de la Casa.

Before you set off, check:

  • Catalonia: the Servei Català de Trànsit's incident list, which covers weather and mountain passes, plus its live map and cameras.
  • The rest of Spain: the DGT's traffic information page and its 011 phone line; for Catalonia's 4 provinces, the DGT's information comes from the Generalitat.
  • Andorra: incidents, webcams and forecasts on mobilitat.ad.
  • France: Bison Futé, the French public road information service.
  • The resorts: Baqueira's status page shows its road access and car parks, and Pal Arinsal's site shows whether the Pal and Arinsal roads are open.

When a private car fits

A car with a driver is the other way to cover these distances, and Chauffeur Hire Barcelona quotes every journey on request. The ski transfers page gathers the routes to the resorts, with pages for La Molina, Grandvalira and Baqueira Beret.

The chauffeur service in Andorra page lists the Andorra routes, parishes and ski areas included, and the Barcelona to Andorra transfer covers the drive from the city. For other destinations, long-distance journeys from Barcelona gathers the longer drives that start in the city.
