By road, Andorra la Vella is about 192 km and 2 h 45 min from Plaça de Catalunya, and about 204 km and 2 h 50 min from Barcelona Airport Terminal 1, without traffic (OpenStreetMap estimates, checked 30 September 2026). The trip ends at an international border, so carry the passport or ID card your nationality requires, and from 1 November to 15 May Andorra requires winter equipment on all its roads.

Journey times from the city and the airport

Andorra has no airport of its own, Visit Andorra notes, and the nearest one is Andorra-La Seu, in La Seu d'Urgell. The estimates below are OpenStreetMap road routings checked on 30 September 2026, with no traffic and no stops.

From To Distance and time Roads in the estimate
Plaça de Catalunya Andorra la Vella 192 km, about 2 h 45 min C-16, N-260, N-145, CG-1
Barcelona Airport T1 Andorra la Vella 204 km, about 2 h 50 min B-20, C-16, N-260, N-145, CG-1
Andorra la Vella Plaça de Catalunya 192 km, about 2 h 40 min CG-1, N-145, N-260, C-16
Andorra la Vella Barcelona Airport T1 203 km, about 2 h 45 min CG-1, N-145, N-260, C-16, C-32

Andorra is divided into 7 parishes, with Andorra la Vella as the capital, and the drive changes with the one you are heading for:

Destination From Plaça de Catalunya Good to know
Sant Julià de Lòria 186 km, about 2 h 35 min Visit Andorra calls it the gateway from Spain
Andorra la Vella 192 km, about 2 h 45 min The capital
Escaldes-Engordany 193 km, about 2 h 45 min The parish of the thermal waters
La Massana 197 km, about 2 h 50 min Home of the Pal Arinsal slopes
Encamp 199 km, about 2 h 50 min Funicamp lift up to Grandvalira
Ordino 200 km, about 2 h 55 min Ordino Arcalís is 216 km, about 3 h 15 min
Canillo 203 km, about 2 h 55 min The largest parish by area
Pas de la Casa 185 km, about 2 h 40 min The estimate runs through France

Pas de la Casa is the exception. Its estimate leaves Catalonia on the C-16 and the C-162, crosses France on the N 20, N 320 and N 22, and enters Andorra from the French side. Visit Andorra names the same 3 French roads, with the Col de Puymorens pass and tunnel, as the way in from France, and Grandvalira calls Pas de la Casa its first access from France.

The main road north: C-16, N-260, N-145 and CG-1

The main estimate leaves Barcelona on the C-16. The Generalitat de Catalunya describes the C-16 between Berga and Bagà as the main road link from the Barcelona area and Central Catalonia to the Cadí tunnel, the Cerdanya and Northern Catalonia. Most of that section has one lane in each direction.

The same page says winter traffic there can triple journey times, with peaks mainly on Friday afternoons heading north and Sunday afternoons heading south. Plan a winter weekend around those 2 windows.

After the C-16, the estimate follows the N-260 to La Seu d'Urgell and the N-145 to the border. Visit Andorra gives the N-145 from La Seu d'Urgell as the road in from Spain, and the Spanish Tax Agency's leaflet for travelers from Andorra refers to its customs office at La Farga de Moles. Inside Andorra, the CG-1 runs up to Andorra la Vella.

Border documents

Andorra is not part of the European Union or the Schengen area, and it can only be reached through Spain or France. What you need depends on your nationality:

  • EU citizens: a passport or national ID card is enough to enter or leave, according to Visit Andorra.
  • Citizens of non-EU Schengen countries: a valid passport, according to Visit Andorra.
  • Other travelers: the Government of Andorra says Andorra itself does not require any visa, but third-country nationals should ask the Spanish or French embassy or consulate whether they need a Schengen visa. If they do, it must be a double-entry or multiple-entry visa, because the trip back from Andorra is a new entry into the Schengen area.
  • Minors traveling alone or with adults who are not their parents: a passport, or a valid ID card with a written authorization signed by their parents, legal guardian or representative. The Government of Andorra notes that many countries issue these authorizations through police stations, so check the rules of the child's country.

Visit Andorra says the borders with Spain and France are open day and night, all year round. Keep passports and ID cards in a bag inside the car, not in a suitcase in the trunk.

The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is also in place. The Government of Andorra says it has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamps with a digital record of the entries and exits of third-country nationals; citizens of the EU and the Schengen area are not subject to it. If it applies to you, check the current rules before you travel.

What you can bring back into Spain

The Government of Andorra says travelers returning to the EU can take set quantities or values of goods bought in Andorra without paying duties or taxes, and must declare at customs anything above their individual allowances. The Spanish Tax Agency's leaflet for travelers arriving from Andorra gives these limits per person, at the time of checking (October 2026):

Goods Allowance per person Notes
Tobacco 300 cigarettes, or 150 cigarillos, or 75 cigars, or 400 g of smoking tobacco Age 17 or over
Alcohol 1.5 liters over 22%, or 3 liters under 22%, plus 5 liters of still wine and 16 liters of beer Age 17 or over
Coffee, tea, perfume 1,000 g of coffee, 200 g of tea, 75 g of perfume and 37.5 cl of eau de toilette Age 17 or over; lower limits for extracts
Food Set amounts of milk, butter, cheese, sugar and meat, up to €300 in total value €150 under age 15
Other goods Up to €900 in value €450 under age 15
Fuel The normal tank of your vehicle plus a portable can of up to 10 liters Applies to the vehicle you travel in

The leaflet adds that each allowance is personal and that the value of one item cannot be split between several people. Within the limits you use the green "nothing to declare" channel; above them, the red "something to declare" channel. Anyone carrying 10,000 euros or more in cash or similar means of payment into or out of the EU must declare it. Visit Andorra notes that the Andorran, Spanish and French customs are open day and night for procedures linked to these allowances.

Winter driving rules on each side of the border

In Andorra

From 1 November to 15 May, special winter equipment is compulsory on the whole Andorran road network, according to the winter driving manual linked from the Government of Andorra's mobility site; Ordino Arcalís repeats the rule on its access page. The manual recommends winter or M+S tires once the average temperature falls below 7 °C, says chains go on the driving wheels with a maximum of 50 km/h once fitted, and sets out 4 snow phases:

Phase Road condition What applies
Yellow Snow on the road Special tires or equipment compulsory, 60 km/h maximum, no motorcycles or mopeds
Orange Ice on the road Chains compulsory for vehicles over 3,500 kg, 50 km/h maximum
Red Very adverse conditions Chains compulsory for all vehicles, 30 km/h maximum
Black Impassable Traffic banned, except winter road maintenance and service vehicles

In Catalonia and the rest of Spain

Where chains are made compulsory on a Spanish road, the DGT's magazine explains that only winter tires marked with the three-peak mountain symbol (3PMSF), not M+S alone, let you carry on without fitting chains. It recommends no more than 30 km/h with metal chains and gives 50 km/h as the maximum with textile ones. Spain's General Traffic Regulation, in the version in force from 1 October 2026, also bans overtaking on motorways and dual carriageways when snow makes driving difficult, and keeps traffic in the right-hand lane (or the one next to it where there are 3 or more lanes) so the others stay clear for emergency vehicles and snowplows.

On the French approach to Pas de la Casa

France's road safety agency, Sécurité Routière, says that between 1 November and 31 March vehicles must have winter tires or carry snow chains or snow socks in certain communes of its mountain ranges, the Pyrenees included. A 2017 agreement between Andorra and France on the N 20, N 320 and N 22, published by Andorra's parliament, describes frequent winter closures on that axis caused by natural hazards, mainly on its upper part.

Bus or private car

Public transport covers the route too. Grandvalira's access page lists 3 bus companies between Barcelona and Andorra: Directbus, which stops at Sants station and Barcelona Airport; Andbus, which serves the airport only; and ALSA, from Estació del Nord. By rail, Visit Andorra points to the Lleida Pirineus high-speed station on the Spanish side and to L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France, about 11 km by road from the border. Check timetables with each operator before you travel.

A private car with a driver is the other option. Chauffeur Hire Barcelona quotes every journey on request: send the route, the date and time, your flight number if you are landing, and the number of guests and bags, counting ski bags and boot bags.

The Barcelona to Andorra transfer covers the trip from the city, the Barcelona Airport to Andorra transfer starts at the terminal, and the chauffeur service in Andorra page lists the routes to and from the parishes and ski areas, among them Barcelona to Pas de la Casa.
