A day at the Dalí Theatre-Museum

Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres in 1904, and in 1974 he opened his own museum there, in the shell of the town's old municipal theater. The building had burned during the Spanish Civil War and stood in ruins until Dalí rebuilt it to his own design: giant eggs along the roofline, a glass geodesic dome over the old stage, and a crypt beneath that stage where he is buried. The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation runs it today, and its collection of more than 1,500 of his works ranges from paintings and drawings to holograms, installations and the jewelry of the Dalí-Jewels rooms.

On this day trip the museum is the whole point. Your driver picks you up where you are staying in Barcelona, takes you north to Figueres for the visit, and brings you back when you are done. The foundation sells its tickets online, so book your entry first and put the time in your request: the pickup is planned backward from it.

Figueres is one corner of what the foundation calls the Dalinian Triangle. The other two are Gala's castle at Púbol and the house at Portlligat, in Cadaqués, which Dalí grew out of a fisherman's hut he bought in 1930. Either one can join the day if you ask for it.

In the museum and the Dalinian Triangle

  1. Teatre-Museu Dalí (Dalí Theatre-Museum)

Inaugurated in 1974 inside what was the Figueres Municipal Theatre, and described by the foundation as Dalí's final great work. It has two areas: the converted theater (rooms 1 to 18) and the later extensions (rooms 19 to 24).

  2. Dalí-Jewels rooms

Rooms 23 and 24 of the museum hold the collection of jewelry designed by Dalí.

  3. The crypt

Dalí is buried in a crypt below the stage floor of the old theater, under the glass geodesic dome that crowns the building.

  4. Salvador Dalí House, Portlligat

Dalí's home and studio by the sea in Cadaqués, which grew from a small fisherman's hut he bought in 1930. With Púbol and Figueres it forms the Dalinian Triangle.

Questions about a Teatre-Museu Dalí day trip

What is the drive time to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, each way?

By road it is about 139 km each way, about 1 h 40 min without traffic, measured from Plaça de Catalunya to the Teatre-Museu Dalí (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). Traffic and your exact pickup address change the real time.

Should we book museum tickets before the day?

Yes. Theatre-Museum tickets are sold on the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation's website, and the booking comes with a reservation code to show when you arrive. With a fixed entry time in your request, the pickup in Barcelona is set to match it.

How much time should we allow inside?

That is your call, and the quote follows it. The museum has two parts, the converted theater (rooms 1 to 18) and the later extensions (rooms 19 to 24) with the Dalí-Jewels rooms. Tell us when you want to be collected for the drive back.

Can we add Púbol or Portlligat to the same day?

Yes. Name them in the request and the longer day is quoted as one trip. The house in Portlligat is only visited with a booking made in advance, by small groups that go in at set intervals, so reserve that slot first. If you plan to stay on the coast instead, see the transfer to Portlligat.

Which private tour includes the Theatre-Museum?

Yes. The private tour on this page pairs a guided walk through medieval Girona with a guided visit to the Theatre-Museum, for your group only, priced per group and booked online. Choose the chauffeur day trip when you would rather keep your own pace and order of visits.

How is this different from the Figueres pages?

This day is planned around the museum. The Figueres day trip covers the rest of the town and the Alt Empordà around it, and the Barcelona to Figueres transfer is a one-way ride for travelers who are staying in Figueres or moving on.
