The Penedès in a day

The DO Penedès runs from the Pont del Diable at Martorell to the Arc de Barà, across 61 municipalities in six counties. Its vineyards sit in three bands: Penedès Marítim between the sea and the Coastal Range, Penedès Central in the middle, and Penedès Superior against the Pre-Coastal Range, with up to ten subzones inside them, from the Massís del Garraf to the Muntanyes d'Ordal. Xarel·lo is the local white grape, grown beside Macabeu and Parellada, and from the 2025 vintage every wine under the DO Penedès label is organic. Some 300 wineries produce here, and an afternoon breeze off the sea tempers the summer heat in the vines.

Vilafranca del Penedès, capital of the Alt Penedès, makes a natural base. Founded in the middle of the 12th century, it keeps the Gothic church of Santa Maria in its old center, and the royal palace houses VINSEUM, the wine museum; the DO has its offices in the town as well. Its neighbor, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, is the center of cava production. The region is castells country too, home to the human towers recognized by UNESCO.

With a driver, nobody in your group has to pass on the wine to drive home. Plan the wineries and lunch, add any visit times you have booked, and the day is quoted from your door in Barcelona and back.

Around the Penedès

  1. Vilafranca del Penedès

Capital of the Alt Penedès and, with neighboring Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, a center of the local wine industry. The town was founded in the middle of the 12th century after the decline of Olèrdola. The Gothic church of Santa Maria, the Palau Reial with VINSEUM, the wine museum, and the Palau Balta stand in its historic center.

Questions about a Penedès day trip

Where does the Penedès estimate end, and how far is it?

In Vilafranca del Penedès, the capital of the Alt Penedès: about 54 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 45 min by road without traffic (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). The wineries spread out across the region from there, so the stops you choose set the length of the day.

Which grapes is the Penedès known for?

Xarel·lo above all, the white grape the DO calls its flagship, alongside Macabeu and Parellada. Traditional reds use Ull de llebre, Carinyena (also called Samsó) and Sumoi. INCAVI, the Catalan wine institute, puts the DO's output at about 18 million bottles a year, about half of them white wine.

Are Penedès wines organic?

The DO Penedès says that all wines under its label are organic from the 2025 vintage on.

Can we visit cava cellars on the same day?

Yes. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is in the Alt Penedès too, so add the cellars you want to the request. For cava and the other Catalan wine areas, from Alella to the Pla de Bages, see the winery chauffeur page.

Can we combine the Penedès with Sitges or Montserrat?

Yes. The Garraf, where Sitges is, is one of the six counties of the DO Penedès, so a winery fits well into a Sitges day trip. The private tour on this page pairs Montserrat with a family-run Penedès winery and a guide, and a Montserrat day trip can add a winery too.
