Essential Montserrat: Landscape, History and Spirituality

Half a day is enough for the essentials of Montserrat when a private vehicle picks you up at your accommodation in Barcelona and your group, not a timetable, decides how long each stop lasts. The road rises into the massif's rounded peaks, protected as a natural park since 1987, and on to the monastery at about 720 meters: a working Benedictine abbey whose history runs back a thousand years, with buildings in Gothic and Renaissance styles. Entrance to the monastery is included, and inside the basilica is La Moreneta, the 12th-century Romanesque wooden carving of the Virgin venerated as Catalonia's patron saint.

A guided walk then follows part of the park's trails around the monastery, with long views across the mountains. The Holy Cave, a pilgrimage site linked to the Virgin's apparition, can be added as an optional stop; the path is uneven and sloped, so tell the guide in advance about any mobility issues.
