What the journey covers

San Sebastián, Donostia in Basque, is the capital of Gipuzkoa and lies on the Bay of Biscay about 20 km from the French border. The city wraps around La Concha bay, a shell-shaped inlet between Mount Igueldo to the west and Mount Urgull to the east, with Santa Clara Island in the middle of it. Its old town, the Parte Vieja, was mostly rebuilt in the 19th century after the city was destroyed in 1813, and in 2016 it shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Wrocław. Barcelona travelers head there for the beaches, for an evening of pintxos and txakoli, for the International Film Festival, or for work.

The drive (512 km, about 6 h 15 min by road without traffic) heads inland rather than along the coast. The estimate runs on the A-2 and A-22 to Huesca, the A-132 and the A-21 through the valleys south of the Pyrenees to Pamplona, then the AP-15 north out of Navarre. The final stretch is the A-15, which crosses the Aralar area past Lekunberri and comes down to Andoain, just south of San Sebastián.

Start of the journey

Pickup in Barcelona

Your journey starts wherever you are staying or working in Barcelona: send the hotel, home, apartment or office address. Add the arrival time you want in San Sebastián, or the hour you would like to leave Barcelona, and the plan is quoted on that basis.

To start at Barcelona Airport or Barcelona Sants, give the flight or the train as the pickup.

End of the journey

Arrival in Donostia / San Sebastián

The journey ends at the San Sebastián address you give: a hotel on the bay, an apartment in the Parte Vieja, a home or an office. If you are crossing into France afterwards or staying elsewhere in Gipuzkoa, send that address instead and the quote follows it.

In San Sebastián

  1. La Concha bay

Two beaches of about 2 km together, La Concha (1,400 m) and Ondarreta (600 m), behind a promenade with Juan Rafael Alday's railing and, at its western end, Eduardo Chillida's sculpture The Comb of the Wind.

  2. Mount Urgull

Why book a private chauffeur

  1. Break the day in Pamplona

The routed line passes about 3 km from Pamplona, roughly 85 km before the end. A late lunch in Navarre's capital leaves a short last stretch to the coast.

  2. Bags for a stay by the sea

A week or more on the Basque coast means real luggage. Everything stays with you from your address in Barcelona to the door of your hotel or apartment.

  3. An arrival time you set

With more than six hours on the road before stops, it helps to fix the arrival first. Tell us when you want to reach San Sebastián and the start is worked back from that.

  4. Onward to France

The city is about 20 km from the border. If the trip continues into France, add the next address and both legs go in one request.

Questions about the Barcelona to Donostia / San Sebastián journey

How long are we on the road to San Sebastián?

Donostia / San Sebastián is about 512 km by road from Plaça de Catalunya, about 6 h 15 min of driving (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). Spain's DGT advises a pause every two hours or 200 km, so with breaks the journey fills most of a day.

Does the journey go via Bilbao or along the coast?

Neither. The estimate goes inland through Huesca and Pamplona and reaches the coast on the A-15, which Wikipedia describes as starting at Andoain, south of San Sebastián, and crossing north-eastern Navarre by the Aralar range. Bilbao, about 80 km to the west in a straight line, has its own page and its own route through Zaragoza.

Can you drop us in the Parte Vieja?

Give the exact address of your hotel or apartment and the quote is for that drop-off. The Parte Vieja sits at the foot of Mount Urgull, at the eastern end of La Concha bay, and most of its buildings date from the rebuilding after 1813.

We are going to San Sebastián for the food. Can we stop on the way?

Yes, add any stop to the request, for example lunch in Pamplona. Pintxos, small slices of bread with a topping held by a toothpick, are described by Wikipedia as a cornerstone of local culture in the Basque Country and Navarre, often served with txakoli, a young white wine.
