What the journey covers

Pamplona, capital of the Chartered Community of Navarre, stands at about 450 m on the flood plain of the Arga, between the mountains of northern Navarre and the Ebro valley. Wikipedia counts it as the first Spanish city on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, and three of the four sides of its old walls still stand, together with a star-shaped citadel that Philip II ordered in 1571. Every July the city holds the San Fermín festival and its running of the bulls, which Hemingway's 1926 novel made known worldwide. People make the trip from Barcelona for the fiestas, to set out on the Camino, for business in the city, or to visit family.

The estimate (427 km, about 5 h 15 min by road without traffic) does not go through Zaragoza. From the A-2 it turns onto the A-22 near Lleida and reaches Huesca, then takes the A-132 north-west past Ayerbe towards Puente la Reina de Jaca. The last part follows the A-21, the Autovía del Pirineo between Jaca and Pamplona, along the valley past Yesa and its reservoir before entering Navarre's capital.

Questions about the Barcelona to Pamplona/Iruña journey

Is Pamplona closer to Barcelona than San Sebastián or Bilbao?

Yes. By road, Pamplona/Iruña is about 427 km from Plaça de Catalunya, about 5 h 15 min without stops (estimate: OpenStreetMap road routing, no traffic, checked September 30, 2026). San Sebastián, further along the same road, has an estimate of 512 km, and Bilbao, reached by way of Zaragoza, 606 km, both checked September 30, 2026. A lunch break in Huesca or a visit on the way adds to the day.

Does the journey go through Zaragoza?

No. The estimate leaves the A-2 near Lleida, takes the A-22 to Huesca and then crosses north-west on the A-132 and the A-21, the Autovía del Pirineo that links Jaca with Pamplona. If you want to go through Zaragoza instead, say so in the request.

Can we visit the Monastery of Leyre on the way?

Yes, add it to the request with the time you want there. The routed line passes about 1 km from the monastery, which stands south of the Sierra de Leyre; its records go back to 842 and it keeps a Romanesque church with the Porta Speciosa portal and an older crypt (Wikipedia).

We are starting the Camino de Santiago in Pamplona. Can you take us there?

Send the address where you will start, or your first night's lodging, as the drop-off. Pamplona is the first Spanish city on the French Way (Wikipedia).

We are going for San Fermín. What should we plan around?

The fiesta runs from July 6 to 14 every year and is known for the running of the bulls, which Hemingway's 1926 novel brought to attention around the world (Wikipedia). If your trip falls in those days, send the request early, with the exact address of your lodging.
