Tarragonès

Tarraco, the Rambla Nova and the coast road

Tarragona stands on the Costa Daurada around the mouth of the Francolí river. It is the capital of the Tarragonès county and of the province of Tarragona, and Idescat gives it 143,260 residents in 2025 on 57.89 km². The Romans knew it as Tarraco: founded as a military camp by Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio, it became the capital of Hispania Citerior and then of the province of Tarraconensis. Its walls, forum, circus, amphitheater and Early Christian necropolis, dating from the third century BC to the sixth century AD, were inscribed together as a World Heritage Site in 2000, according to the Generalitat's heritage agency.

In the center, the Rambla Nova is the main shopping street, the Balcó del Mediterrani looks out to sea and El Serrallo is the old fishing quarter. People travel here for the Roman sites, for business in the city and its port, or on the way to the beach towns south of it. Reus Airport lies a few kilometers away, and high-speed trains serve the city at Camp de Tarragona station. From Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona, OpenStreetMap routing estimates 95 km, about 1 h 20 min by road without traffic, via the C-31, C-32, AP-7 and A-7.

A quote needs four things: where in Tarragona you start or finish, where the other end is, when you travel, and how many people and suitcases are coming.
