Tarragona was Tarraco, a Roman provincial capital whose remains UNESCO lists as the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco. UNESCO explains that the Roman city was laid out on a series of artificial terraces: an upper part given over to the provincial authorities, the imperial cult and public shows, and a residential city with its own forum that ran down to the sea and the port. Those buildings still fix the layout of today's old town, where most of them survive. Several parts of the World Heritage site lie outside the center, among them the Les Ferreres aqueduct, the Tower of the Scipios, the Mèdol quarry and the Centcelles villa and mausoleum.
