Montgat is where the Maresme county begins. The AMB describes it as the most southerly municipality of the Maresme, on the coast at the edge of the Barcelonès, between Badalona and El Masnou. Its old core grew around the Turó de Montgat, a small cliff over the sea crossed by the road and by a tunnel for the coastal railway; inland, foothills of the coastal range rise to Les Guixeres (112 m) and La Marquesa (64 m). Idescat recorded 12,835 residents in 2025 on 2.91 square kilometers.
That tunnel has a place in railway history. Catalan Wikipedia says it was the first railway tunnel in Catalonia and Spain, opened in 1848 with the Barcelona to Mataró line, and that the quarrying which followed took away more than half of the hill. Montgat was a district of Tiana until July 6, 1933, when a decree of the Generalitat made it a municipality. Two beaches line the shore, the former Banys Montgat beach and Monsolís, one on each side of the hill. In 2012 the town council recognized the sung fish auction on the beach as intangible cultural heritage.
