What the transfer covers
Lleida is the largest town and the capital of the Segrià county, of the Ponent region and of the province of Lleida, a city of about 140,000 people on the Segre, the main tributary of the Ebro. Above its center stands the Seu Vella, the old cathedral begun in 1203 on the hill that is the city's highest point, and a second hill, Gardeny, carries a fortress the Knights Templar used. The city has its own station on the Madrid to Barcelona high-speed line, Lleida Pirineus, and an airport at Alguaire that opened in 2010.
This is a straight run west across Catalonia. The route estimate leaves Barcelona on the B-23, joins the A-2 through the Bruc tunnel and stays on it almost to the city, then enters on the LL-11. The A-2 is the motorway that links Barcelona with Madrid, so the same road carries on to Zaragoza. Some travelers go to Lleida for the day and back; others use it as a first stage toward the valleys of the Lleida Pyrenees, since the N-230 heads north from the city toward the Val d'Aran.
