What the transfer covers

Puigcerdà is the historic capital of the Cerdanya, a town of about 10,000 people at 1,202 meters that shares its border directly with the French town of Bourg-Madame. Alfonso I of Aragon, Count of Barcelona, founded it in 1178 to replace an older settlement as the valley's capital. Its old town keeps a 12th-century bell tower, the only visible remains of a parish church destroyed in 1936. On the northwest side of town lies an artificial lake, recorded as early as 1260 and fed from the Querol river by a channel; after the Carlist Wars, Barcelona families built summer villas along its banks.

The estimate climbs the C-16 out of Barcelona into the Cerdanya, then crosses the plain on the C-162 and the N-260 to the town. Puigcerdà is also on the railway that crosses the Pyrenees into France, opened in 1929, and Rodalies line R3 runs through it between Barcelona and La Tor de Querol. Llívia, a Spanish town entirely surrounded by France, is close by. A transfer here might end at a villa by the lake, a hotel in the old town, or accommodation for a ski week in the neighboring municipality of Alp.
