What the transfer covers
Sort is the capital of the Pallars Sobirà county, a town of 2,236 people (2025) at 692 m beside the Noguera Pallaresa, a river that rises on the Pla de Beret in the Val d'Aran and runs 154 km to the Segre. It was once the capital of the County of Pallars, and remains of the counts' castle, recorded from the 13th century, still stand in town. The name is older than the Romans and is thought to mean bridge, after the one important crossing of the river. Today the river sets the pace: Sort has hosted canoeing championships, the freestyle world championship among them in 2019, and in the old jail the Presó-Museu Camí de la Llibertat, opened in 2007, recalls the escape routes over the Pyrenees during the Second World War.
The road estimate takes the C-16 north from Barcelona into the Cerdanya and then stays on the N-260 for the rest of the way: west along the Segre to La Seu d'Urgell, up over the Port del Cantó at 1,718 m, and down into the Noguera Pallaresa valley to the town square. Snow often covers the pass in cold weather, so in winter the time you choose to travel deserves some thought.

Start of the journey

For the next valleys west, the Vielha and Vall de Boí transfers have their own pages and estimates.
Weather on the Port del Cantó can change the drive in winter: the pass, on the N-260 between the Alt Urgell and the Pallars Sobirà, is often covered by snow in cold periods (Viquipèdia). Check the road conditions for your date before you travel.
