Six thousand years ago, Neolithic miners were already sinking shafts and galleries under what is now Gavà to reach variscite, a mineral used for ornaments. The Generalitat's museum guide calls these the oldest gallery mines in Europe; today they are an archaeological park, and finds such as the Venus of Gavà are shown at the Museu de Gavà in the eighteenth-century Torre Lluch.

The municipality covers 30.75 km², a strip the AMB traces from the southern beaches of the Llobregat delta up to the Serra de Ponent, the last foothills of the Garraf massif. The town itself sits on the plain at 9 m, under the Serra de les Ferreres; Viladecans and Sant Climent de Llobregat border it to the east and Castelldefels to the west. In the hills, about 3 km from the center at Bruguers, stand the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Bruguers and the ruins of Eramprunyà castle. By the sea lies Gavà Mar, one of the town's neighborhoods. Idescat counted 48,181 inhabitants in 2025.
