In Vallbona the Rec Comtal still runs in the open, and residents draw on it to water their vegetable gardens. The canal was in use before the year 1000 and appears in documents from 1075; it carried water from the Besòs at Montcada more than 12 km into Barcelona, and by the 13th century 21 flour mills stood along its course. The barri's name comes from the old quadra de Vallbona, a large estate around the Torre del Baró, a tower knocked down to extend Avinguda Meridiana, today the C-58.
