More than a quarter of El Prat de Llobregat is taken up by Barcelona Airport, which is why the airport's official name, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, carries the town's. Both terminals, T1 and T2, are inside the municipality.

The rest of the town shares the airport's flat ground. The AMB describes a territory lying entirely on the plain of the Llobregat delta, between the right bank of the river and the Remolar lagoon, with 8 km of coastline. Barcelona's Zona Franca is the neighbor to the east, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Cornellà de Llobregat are to the north, Sant Boi de Llobregat to the northwest and Viladecans to the west. Idescat recorded 66,251 residents in 2025 on 31.41 km².

Between the runways and the sea, part of the delta is protected: Aena describes coastal lagoons and pine woods within the Llobregat Delta Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area for Birds, with a lookout at the end of the town's seaside path. Away from the coast, El Prat is known for its blue-legged chickens, the potablava breed, and for its artichokes. With the terminals this close, many trips from an El Prat address run the other way, into Barcelona, to the cruise port or to Barcelona Sants, and each is quoted from your street and number.

    Aena built L'Illa, an artificial lagoon in El Prat's coastal strip between the airport and the sea. Its lookout faces the lagoon and the Can Camins pine grove with the airport behind, and the La Roberta lookout stands at the end of El Prat's seaside path.
