Sant Andreu district
Low-cost houses by the Besòs, rebuilt in the 1980s
Baró de Viver began as a project of 1928, when Barcelona's housing board bought land on the right bank of the Besòs, then still part of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, to build cases barates for the families living in the shacks that remained on Montjuïc, ahead of the 1929 International Exposition. The city raised four groups of such low-cost houses at the end of the 1920s, and this one took the title of Darius Rumeu i Freixa, second Baron of Viver and mayor of Barcelona under the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. In 1943 it became part of Barcelona, together with neighboring El Bon Pastor.
Today it is a compact barri of the Sant Andreu district, about 23 hectares with some 2,650 residents (2021). New blocks went up in 1958 and 1959, and a 1985 reform plan replaced the original houses with the Illa Baró de Viver by the architect Emili Donato, built between 1985 and 1988 around an interior square called the gran saló. The Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda Litoral, which now surround the barri, broke its old isolation.

The housing that replaced the original cases barates. Emili Donato designed it in 1984 and it was built between 1985 and 1988, on a U-shaped plan with long arms and a cross wing that frame an interior public square, the gran saló. It fills the block bounded by the Passeig de Santa Coloma, Carrer de la Ciutat d'Asunción, Carrer de Campins and Carrer de Tiana, and it is listed in the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya.
