A castle village above the river
El Papiol grew on a rise about 160 meters high around its castle, which is documented from 1115, with Ramon Berenguer III as its first lord, and is still the seat of a barony. Below and around it, the AMB describes a municipality spread between the last foothills of the Serra de Collserola, the Llobregat and the Riera de Rubí. Most of the land is rugged, the highest point is the Puig Madrona at 336 meters, and a large share lies inside the Collserola park.
This is the smallest place in its corner of the valley by population: Idescat counts 4,404 residents in 2025, on 8.95 square kilometers. For a long time it was a small farming and industrial village with brickworks and textile mills; the Catalan Wikipedia describes it today as mainly residential. Its neighbors are Castellbisbal and Pallejà to the west, Valldoreix, part of Sant Cugat del Vallès, to the north, and Molins de Rei to the east. The AP-7 and the road from Sabadell to Molins de Rei both pass through.
The Rodalies R4 stops at El Papiol station, which is away from the village center and linked to it by a local bus. That gap is one reason to book a car for a flight or a heavy suitcase: give the street in the village or the name of your residential area, the time, and where you are going.
Castle, hermitage and the rock fissures

El Papiol Castle
The village's best-known building, documented from 1115. It stands directly on the rock, has a rectangular plan with a tower and keeps a medieval dungeon inside.
