According to the town council, medieval documents mention the count's orchards here, and over time they gave the place its name; before that the area was known as Garrosa or Vilagarrosa, although a church dedicated to Sant Vicenç already stood. The first written reference dates from 955, in land donations recorded in the cartulary of the monastery of Sant Cugat. Much older is the Roman kiln, from the first century, which the council counts among the largest and best preserved in Catalonia.

The Llobregat forms the eastern edge of the municipality and separates it from Molins de Rei and Sant Feliu de Llobregat. The AMB describes the Serralada Litoral to the west, the Sant Antoni hill on the southern boundary with Torrelles de Llobregat and Santa Coloma de Cervelló, and the Cervelló stream and Pallejà to the north. Between 1950 and 1970 the population grew fourfold, from 3,711 to 15,048; Idescat now counts 28,760 residents (2025) on 9.12 square kilometers.
