Montbau lies at the foot of the Collserola range, above the Ronda de Dalt and the Passeig de la Vall d'Hebron, in the Horta-Guinardó district. Its 204.7 hectares reach well beyond the housing: the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron fills the western part of the barri and the University of Barcelona's Mundet campus the eastern part. On the official map it touches la Vall d'Hebron, Sant Genís dels Agudells, la Teixonera and Horta.
The estate grew from a plan that the Patronat Municipal de l'Habitatge, the city's housing board, approved from 1957. Work began in 1961 on a first phase drawn by Guillermo Giráldez, Pedro López-Iñigo and Xavier Subias, a second phase followed, and between 1964 and 1968 Joan Bosch i Agustí built 58 single-family homes known as the casetes blanques. Turisme de Barcelona describes the blocks as independent, of different heights and set at right angles to catch daylight and cross ventilation, after the model of Berlin's 1957 Interbau. Streets carry the names of arts and artists, such as Arquitectura, Escultura, Música and Poesia, and the metro only arrived in 1985; line 3 now stops at Vall d'Hebron, Montbau and Mundet.
