The name dates from 1919, when the Ajuntament approved the name passeig de Verdum in memory of the First World War battle of Verdun, where many Catalan volunteers fought. Documents found at the Centre Cultural Els Propis show that residents wrote it Verdum, with an m; the spelling with an n became the standard under Franco. In a participatory process held from May 8 to July 3, 2026, the traditional Verdum won close to 80 percent of the votes.
Most of the barri grew out of two large housing schemes: the Habitatges del Governador, built between 1952 and 1955, of poor quality and only 20 square meters each, and an estate of the Obra Sindical del Hogar. Many of those homes were later rebuilt as the Ajuntament set about rehabilitating the barri, opening Plaça de Joan Riera, putting a car park under Plaça de Francesc Layret and closing several streets to traffic. Verdun is now a triangle of 23.7 hectares bounded by Carrer de l'Artesania, Via Júlia and Via Favència with the Ronda de Dalt, home to 12,865 people in 2021, with Les Roquetes, La Prosperitat, La Guineueta and Canyelles around it.
Via Júlia, the rambla along one side, has an L4 metro stop of the same name. Via Júlia
A rambla between Verdun and La Prosperitat, running from the Ronda de Dalt to Plaça de la República, catalogued as a rambla in 1986. It takes its name from the official name of Roman Barcino, Colonia Iulia Augusta Paterna Faventia Barcino, and its light tower, the Torre de Llum, was designed by Antoni Rosselló.
