Canyelles went up in 1974, the last polígon d'habitatges (housing estate) of the years before democracy, and at first it lacked basic infrastructure and services. Two changes improved its links with the rest of the city: the ring roads, opened in 1991, with the Ronda de Dalt running along Via Favència at the neighborhood's southern edge, and line 3 of the metro, which reached Canyelles station, under Carrer de Federico García Lorca, in 2001. TMB traces the station's name to Canellas, a historic fountain on the hill called Segarra.
The Parc de Josep Maria Serra Martí fills 4.26 hectares between Carrer d'Antonio Machado, Carrer de Federico García Lorca and Via Favència. Cinto Hom and Carles Casamor laid it out in 1994 around a fountain by Pedro Barragán dedicated to Manuel de Falla, with jets of water, light and sound. Its name honors the deputy mayor for urban planning who helped bring the 1992 Olympic Games to Barcelona. Canyelles shares boundaries with La Guineueta, Verdun, Les Roquetes and Torre Baró in Nou Barris, and with Horta in the Horta-Guinardó district.

Parc de Josep Maria Serra Martí
