L'Antiga Esquerra, between Balmes and Urgell
L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample is the older, eastern half of the Eixample's left side. Until the city's 2006 division into 73 neighborhoods it formed one barri, the Esquerra de l'Eixample, with what is now La Nova Esquerra, and Carrer del Comte d'Urgell and Avinguda de Sarrià still mark the line between the two. Carrer de Balmes separates it from La Dreta de l'Eixample, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes from Sant Antoni, and Avinguda Diagonal closes the top of the grid. In 2021 it had 43,046 residents on 122.8 hectares.
Hospital Clínic, the University of Barcelona's teaching hospital, opened on Carrer de Villarroel in December 1906. At the southern end, Elies Rogent's historic university building faces Plaça de la Universitat. The Mercat del Ninot is named after a painted figurehead from an Italian ship that a tavern keeper on Carrer de València used as his sign in the 1880s. From 1909 to 1922 FC Barcelona played at its first ground of its own, the Camp del carrer Indústria on today's Carrer de París, where spectators sitting along the top of the stand were seen from behind by people in the street: the story behind the nickname culers.

Historic Building of the University of Barcelona
Elies Rogent's building on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, facing Plaça de la Universitat. Classes started there in 1871, it was officially opened in 1874 and it was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1970. Today it houses the faculties of Philology and Communication and of Mathematics and Computer Science.
