El Poblenou grew out of one of the settlements of Sant Martí de Provençals, and in the late 19th century it was the most heavily industrial area in Catalonia: textile mills, metal foundries, chemical works and food factories such as Ca l'Aranyó and Can Rivière. That history earned the wider area the nickname of the Catalan Manchester. Since the district's 2006 reorganization, the official barri of El Poblenou is smaller than what people call Poblenou. It is bounded by Carrer de Pere IV and Avinguda Diagonal, Carrer de Bac de Roda, Carrer de Taulat and Avinguda d'Icària on the sea side, and Carrer d'Àvila, and had 34,411 residents in 2021.
The Rambla del Poblenou is its main street, running from Gran Via toward Bogatell beach. Around it, the 22@ plan approved in 2000 replaced the old 22a industrial zoning across 115 blocks of former factory land, and thousands of companies opened offices on it. The old Poblenou cemetery, opened in 1775, is on Carrer del Taulat.
