Sant Martí district

The Vila Olímpica, built for the 1992 Games

La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou was built to house the athletes of the 1992 Olympic Games, on a former industrial part of Poblenou called Nova Icària, a name that recalled the utopian socialists. The architects Josep Martorell, Oriol Bohigas and David Mackay, of MBM, drew up the plan with Albert Puigdomènech, and a company, Vila Olímpica SA, was formed in December 1986 to carry it out.

The first plan had four towers; two were built, Torre Mapfre and the Hotel Arts. The Port Olímpic, finished in 1991, held the sailing events of the Games and lies between the Barceloneta and Nova Icària beaches, with 743 moorings today. The neighborhood belongs to the Sant Martí district and had 9,395 residents on 94.3 hectares in 2021. On its western side, next to the Parc de la Ciutadella, Pompeu Fabra University runs its Ciutadella campus in two former barracks and the old Dipòsit de les Aigües.

A driver from the Vila Olímpica can take you from a hotel or apartment by the sea to the airport, the cruise terminals or Barcelona Sants, or out for a day on the Costa Brava. Send the hotel's name or your street, the departure hour, and the number of travelers and suitcases, and a quote comes back for that journey.
