El Carmel, a neighborhood on its own hill
El Carmel spreads over the hill that shares its name, a foothill of the Collserola range that reaches 265.6 meters. The ground is rugged, so many streets climb steeply, and street escalators now help people move around the barri. Its neighbors are La Teixonera, La Clota, Horta, La Font d'en Fargues and Can Baró in Horta-Guinardó, with El Coll and La Salut on the Gràcia side. The 2021 count was 32,724 residents on 0.94 square kilometers.
The name comes from a hermitage of the Mare de Déu del Mont Carmel, built between 1860 and 1864, and a new church went up between 1985 and 1988. The land was once divided among four towns: Gràcia, Sant Joan d'Horta, Sant Martí de Provençals and Sant Andreu de Palomar. Park Güell covers the hill's western slope but belongs to the Gràcia district, and the battery people call the búnquers del Carmel stands on the neighboring Turó de la Rovira. Line 5 of the metro reached the barri on 30 July 2010, with stations at El Carmel and El Coll-La Teixonera.
