Porta's story begins in 1839, when Sant Andreu de Palomar, then a town of its own, moved its cemetery onto these fields because its population was growing. Small industries and other buildings went up around the cemetery, and as building spread through the 19th and 20th centuries, the tracks of the railway line to Zaragoza cut the new neighborhood off from Sant Andreu. The cemetery is still here, with Neoclassical and Modernista tombs and an octagonal chapel from 1913.
Avinguda Meridiana marks Porta's boundary with the Sant Andreu district, and Passeig de Fabra i Puig, Carrer del Doctor Pi i Molist, Passeig de Verdum and Passeig de Valldaura close the other sides. The Parc de Can Dragó, 11.86 hectares, opened its first phase in 1990 where railway workshops had stood empty since the line went underground in 1965; it has an athletics track, swimming pools and works by Pau Gargallo and Sol LeWitt. Two old farmhouses survive, Can Verdaguer, now a civic center, and Can Valent. Line 4 of the metro stops at Llucmajor and line 5 at Virrei Amat.

Parc de Can Dragó
An 11.86-hectare park designed by Enric Pericas on the site of former workshops of the Companyia dels Camins de Ferro del Nord. The first phase opened in 1990 and the pools in 1992. It has an athletics track, a sports hall, Pau Gargallo's bronze Aurigues olímpics and Sol LeWitt's monument to the victims of terrorism, and it is bounded by Avinguda Meridiana, Avinguda de Rio de Janeiro, Passeig d'Andreu Nin and Passeig de Valldaura.
