Sant Martí de Provençals takes its name from an old municipality that Barcelona annexed on 20 April 1897. In 1845 that town was spread over four settlements, la Sagrera, el Taulat, el Clot and la Muntanya, and its population gathered around the parish church. Today's neighborhood is much smaller: 74.5 hectares of the Sant Martí district bounded by the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes to the southeast, El Clot to the southwest, La Sagrera to the northwest and La Verneda i la Pau to the northeast, home to 26,299 people in 2021.
The church is still the oldest landmark. A chapel to Saint Martin of Tours stood on the site in the 11th century, and the present building, with a florid Gothic doorway and two square towers, was rebuilt from the 15th century and finished in 1688. The Parc de Sant Martí, laid out in phases between 1979 and 1992 on a project by Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí, surrounds it, and three old farmhouses in the park, Ca l'Arnó, Can Planes and Can Cadena, now serve the neighbors. On Carrer del Treball, the Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez opened in 2022 and won IFLA's international prize for a public library the following year.

Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez
