Sant Andreu district

The 1952 Congrés estate and the indianos' blocks

On the western edge of the Sant Andreu district, El Congrés i els Indians carries a name that joins two very different pieces of city. Most of it is the housing estate planned after the XXXV International Eucharistic Congress, held in Barcelona from May 27 to June 1, 1952: 2,700 homes, 300 shop units and the parish church of Sant Pius X, laid out on 16.5 hectares of the old Can Ros estate by the architects Josep Soteras, Carles Marquès and Antoni Pineda. The rest is the barri dels Indians, a set of blocks where indianos settled on their return from the Americas.

About 14,500 people live on its roughly 40 hectares (2021). The original core is bounded by the streets of Alexandre Galí, Ramon Albó, Riera d'Horta, Concepción Arenal, Garcilaso, Felip II and Puerto Príncipe, and the barri reaches toward the Passeig de Maragall and Carrer d'Olesa. The Can Ros farmhouse, also called Ca l'Armera, still stands on Carrer del Cardenal Tedeschini as a private home, and the Canòdrom on Carrer de Concepción Arenal, a greyhound track from 1964 to 2006, now houses the Ateneu d'Innovació Digital i Democràtica.

A chauffeur from here serves trips to the airport, Barcelona Sants or the port, events elsewhere in the city and days out on the coast. A short message with your street, the pickup hour and the size of your group is all a quote for that journey needs.
